The ongoing feud between Sugar and Fak in The Bear begs the question of what exactly Francie Fak did to Sugar. Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto (Abby Elliot) is the sister of protagonist Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) while Neil Fak (Matty Matheson) is often referred to as Carmy’s best friend and friendly handyman. Fak and Sugar have known each other for years, which brings about a lot of good and bad history. It would not have been surprising if The Bear season 3 introduced Francie Fak as another supporting character to add to the show’s rich and diverse cast, but instead introduced another Fak named Sammy. However, all the emotions packed into the momentary mentions of her make it likely that Francie will make an appearance at some point in The Bear.

Since Francie Fak does not make an appearance in The Bear season 3, the mystery of exactly what she did and why Sugar dislikes her should be addressed and explained in The Bear season 4. From the little that is known of the incident, Francie clearly did something awful to Sugar that other characters are aware of, causing general disapproval of her despite the situation seemingly occurring years ago. Considering Fak and his brother Ted are still closely integrated into the Berzatto family in the present timeline, it’s more than likely that Francie will eventually be introduced.

While the brief, yet ambiguous, references to Francie have been a creative and hilarious detail of the writing style in The Bear, adamant fans of the show would enjoy learning exactly what Sugar and Fak are talking about. The ongoing joke was a great hidden Easter egg in The Bear season 2, which was packed full of nuanced backstories and interwoven relationships between many characters. With a show that cares about its characters as much as The Bear does, it’s nearly inevitable that Francie Fak’s transgression will be revealed one way or another.

The mention of Francie Fak in The Bear season 2 could set up a reveal in The Bear season 4 since she was left out entirely of season 3, with Francie being introduced in either the present or a flashback. The incident is mentioned during the 5-year flashback in The Bear season 2, episode 6 “Fishes”, an episode was fully dedicated to revealing major characters and stories that shaped the lives of the Berzattos in the present tense. The Bear season 1 also contained a brief flashback to introduce Mikey, and The Bear season 3 has the most flashbacks of all the seasons, so The Bear season 4 could take a similar route with the Francie Fak and Sugar Berzatto feud.

The truth of what Francie Fak did to Sugar and why everyone collectively hates her so much may never be revealed in The Bear, especially with the continuation of the experimental aspects of the series that were introduced in season 2 and heavily expanded on in season 3. The Bear season 3 wasn’t as concerned about adding more characters to the extended family tree as it was expanding on and adding depth to the characters that have already been introduced, particularly Carmy, Donna, and several of the fan-favorite guest appearances from season 2, such as Chef Luca and Chef Terry. There’s still potential, however, for Francie to be cast in The Bear season 4, perhaps at Tiff and Frank’s wedding.
