The 2024 slasher movie In a Violent Nature, holder of an 81% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating, is now available on VOD. The slasher genre has been a mainstay of movies since the 1970s, and even today, filmmakers keep putting new spins on the venerable form. This year saw the release of a particularly gory slasher movie in Chris Nash’s In a Violent Nature, about an avenging spirit stalking unwitting teenagers in the forest.

Nash’s artful slasher impressed critics to the tune of an 81% fresh rating on RT, while grossing a solid $4.2 million in its theatrical run, and now the ultra-gory slasher In a Violent Nature is available on VOD at $6.99 to rent and $14.99 to purchase (via Amazon).

In A Violent Nature Has The Makings Of A Cult Classic

Slasher films are a dime-a-dozen, and by-and-large, are not impressive either to critics or audiences. What sets In a Violent Nature apart from its fellow slashers is director Nash’s approach to the material. The film indeed has the simplest of plots, as captured by the film’s synopsis:

When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back — along with anyone in his way.

Critics noted the almost experimental nature of Nash’s In a Violent Nature direction, as he follows the killer Johnny’s relentless pursuit of his victims. A masked demon single-mindedly stalking teenagers through the woods is the oldest of slasher plots, of course, but Nash found ways to make the slasher experience feel new again, by going deep into the POV of the killer himself, in some ways turning slasher conventions on their ear.

In a Violent Nature is an interesting case of a slasher movie impressing critics more than audiences: its 81% RT critics’ score is far higher than its 44% audience score. Those posting negative reviews were bored by the movie’s arthouse slasher approach, which suggests that the movie will go over better with horror aficionados than those looking for a fun time with an old school slasher movie. Nash’s movie may not be for everyone, but it has all the makings of a cult classic, and it’s now available on VOD.
