Descendants: The Rise of Red is the long-awaited fourth installment of the Descendants franchise, and Screen Rant can proudly present a new featurette breaking down its protagonist and her parental problems. The musical fantasy series centers on the children of Disney villains and has already birthed three movies as well as several television specials and short films, but this is the first feature film in the franchise not to center on Dove Cameron’s Mal.

Instead, Descendants: The Rise of Red offers a spinoff story to complement the original trilogy. Though Auradon remains the primary location, the plot focuses on Wonderland’s Princess Red, who is the spirited daughter of the rather strict Queen of Hearts. In her grudge against Auradon, the Queen of Hearts incites a coup, leaving Red to team up with Cinderella’s daughter Chloe to stop her mother’s destruction through the use of a time-traveling pocketwatch.

Screen Rant is thrilled to present an exclusive featurette from Descendants: The Rise of Red, introducing Kylie Cantrall’s Red and her Wonderland surroundings. Fans can catch both snippets of her songs and signs of her internal struggle throughout, especially when Rita Ora breaks down the Queen of Hearts’ love for harmony — which her daughter Red most certainly disrupts.

Why Descendants: The Rise Of Red Is An Exciting Continuation For The Franchise

Descendants 3 premiered in 2019, and much of the cast has grown up and moved on in the intervening four years, so the franchise had to take a more circuitous road to reach a sequel. Nevertheless, The Rise of Red has plenty to offer longtime fans, with the return of beloved characters such as McClain’s Uma and Melanie Paxson’s Fairy Godmother. In addition, Disney is pulling from even further back and revisiting Brandy in her iconic role as Cinderella from the 1997 Rodgers & Hammerstein’s movie.

Furthermore, the use of a time machine is a fun and refreshing way of threading the Descendants back to the more well-known characters they are descended from, offering a new look at familiar faces. The movie also brings Dara Reneé and Kylie Cantrall into the main storyline, after previously introducing them in the Descendants Remix Dance Party special. Getting to see the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costars work together again after that show’s finale is sure to be a treat for Disney Channel enthusiasts.
