Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd’s newest TV series has been revealed, however the show won’t be on Netflix like his previous project. Gadd’s Baby Reindeer was inspired by true events, acting as a fictionalized version of his experience with a stalker, as well as the aftermath of him getting sexually assaulted by a television writer. The miniseries received critical acclaim for its story and performances, in particular Gadd, who starred in the lead role. Because of its success, the show has become a memorable newcomer for 2024.

Now, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced Gadd’s newest show after Baby Reindeer, a drama that he will be writing and executive producing in partnership with HBO and the BBC. The six-episode series, currently under the working title Lions, is about estranged “brothers” Niall and Ruben clashing during the former’s wedding in a story spanning a 40-year timeline. Alexandra Brodski (Somewhere Boy) and Eshref Reybrouck (Ferry: The Series) are attached to direct.

Lions Will Be Very Different From Baby Reindeer

The Upcoming Show Won’t Be Based On Richard Gadd’s Life

The series will also be produced by Wendy Griffin (The Lion King), while executive producers Gaynor Holmes (BBC) and Gavin Smith (BBC Scotland) join Gadd in representing the BBC’s contribution to the production. Other executive producers include Tally Garner and Morven Reid for Banijay UK company Mam Tor Productions, while HBO will act as a co-producer on the series. While Lions’ climactic moment seems like it will happen at Niall’s wedding, the story will document their history together from when they met as teenagers up through 40 years later. This includes exploring their changing world and the definition of manhood.

What makes Lions stand out from Baby Reindeer, though, is that it won’t be based on Gadd’s own experiences like the Netflix series was. This means there won’t be characters like Martha who represent real-world people in his life, nor direct parallels to things that happened to him during a time of great hardship. Because the story will be wholly original, the realistic resonance of his previous work won’t be there. However, given the talent he’s displayed regardless of subject matter, the series will likely carry plenty of weight behind its central feud.

Since the show has just been announced, it seems more concrete news about what to expect from it won’t be arriving for some time. However, with Gadd leading the project’s writing as he did Baby Reindeer, it seems the show will have plenty of intriguing twists and turns throughout its decades-long storyline. With more info likely to arrive from HBO and the BBC in the future, this new shows seems like it will be a unique follow-up to the creative’s popular Netflix miniseries.
