Korean actor Jung Woo-sung sits in the director’s chair for A Man of Reason, in which he also stars as a recently released convicted torn between loyalty to his old crime boss and the possibility of a family life with his girlfriend. The release of his new movie comes after his roles in 2023’s romantic K-drama Tell Me That You Love Me and 2022’s highly acclaimed political thriller Hunt.

A Man of Reason opens with Soo Hyuk’s release from prison after spending a decade behind bars on behalf of his boss, though his loyalty is still questioned once he’s free. Upon learning that his girlfriend (played by Lee Elijah, who starred in the Netflix K-drama Chief of Staff) gave birth to his daughter while he was imprisoned, Soo Hyuk decides to leave his life of crime behind — but not before his boss hires a seasoned killer to kidnap his daughter, thus unleashing an action-packed ride full of revenge.

Comparing A Man Of Reason To Jung Woo Sung’s Previous Work Highlights His Range

While movies like Hunt and Innocent Witness prove that Woo-sung has the market cornered on hardnosed thrillers and crime dramas, his most recent romance drama before A Man of Reason is a fascinating outlier. Tell Me You Love Me follows a deaf artist named Cha Jin-woo (Woo-sung) who falls for aspiring actress Jung Mo-eun (Shin Hyun-been) and helps her navigate the communication barrier between them. Its slow pace and mellow tone stand out from Woo-sung’s usual roster of crime and action-filled drama.

A Man of Reason also stars a talented ensemble cast, including Kim Nam-gil (who recently kicked butt in Prime Video’s Island), Park Sung-woong (Netflix’s Bloodhounds), and Park Yoo-na (who previously starred in the hit drama True Beauty alongside Cha Eun-woo). The movie first debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in 2022 and was released a year later in South Korea, finally making its way to North American screens in 2024. Fans of the actor should check out A Man of Reason to see how he branches out into other areas of the industry.
