That ’90s Show season 2 has continued incorporating the events and features of That ’70s Show through Easter eggs and references. This makes a lot of sense since the franchise is built on nostalgia for decades past. While the parent series depended on features of the ’70s, That ’90s Show is able to take this a step further, bringing in various references to the ’90s while also drawing on the moments, characters, sets, and other iconic aspects of That ’70s Show. It’s all part of what has made the spinoff series so much fun to watch.

The first season of Netflix’s That ’90s Show brought audiences back to the Forman house in Point Place, Wisconsin, the setting of That ’70 Show. Though 15 years had passed since Eric and the gang’s stories had ended, Red and Kitty’s home looked much the same, and the basement remained the perfect place for a group of trouble-making teenagers to hang out. Other features of That ’70s Show also returned, with the opening theme “In the Street” getting a ’90s makeover, the Vista Cruiser making a comeback, and more. Now, That ’90s Show season 2 has snuck in more memorable Easter eggs and references.

Netflix’s That ’90s Show season 1 features numerous Easter eggs and references to That ’70s Show, including visits to familiar locations.

Red Ragging On Eric For Being Soft

Eric Wasn’t In That ’90s Show Season 2, But He Was Still The Subject Of Red’s Jokes

It was no secret in That ’70s Show that Eric wasn’t what Red considered the traditional image of a man. He often made jokes at his son’s expense, primarily aimed at him being weak, soft, nerdy, and intolerant to hard work. Though Topher Grace’s Eric is absent from That ’90s Show season 2, Red still managed to make some jokes about his son’s weaknesses. In classic That ’70s Show fashion, this led Kitty and Donna to gush over just how cute Eric being “soft” makes him in their eyes.

17

Nate Jumping Off The Point Place Water Tower

The Water Tower Continues To Be A Running Gag

It became a tradition in That ’70s Show for characters to fall or jump off the Point Place water tower, and this running gag has continued into That ’90s Show. In the first season, Leia and Gwen added graffiti to the tower, layering it on top of the giant pot leaf Hyde and Kelso painted there in the first season of That ’70s Show. As is traditional, a couple of characters also took a tumble off the tower in the spinoff series’ first season. Now, in season 2, the gag was continued when Nate jumped off the water tower to escape Jay and Nikki, who learned from the radio that he had almost kissed Leia.

16

Red & Bob’s Unique Friendship

Bob Is Red’s Neighbor Again In That ’90s Show Season 2

Bob was always a significant nuisance to Red in That ’70s Show, and though it looked like Sherri was going to take over this role in That ’90s Show, season 2 has brought back the old neighbor dynamic. Bob moved to Florida after the end of the original series, but part 2 of That ’90s Show saw him move back to Point Place to live across the street from the Formans. This was much to Red’s frustration, and the two jumped right back into their familiar ways and unique friendship.

More Great Celebrity Cameos

That ’90s Show Has Brought In Several Stars Known From The 1990s

That ’70s Show brought in dozens of celebrity cameos throughout its eight seasons, and this is a trend that That ’90s Show has since picked up. The guest stars from the 70s helped set the stage for the parent series, and That ’90s Show season 2 has adopted this same strategy by bringing in prominent public figures from the 1990s. Lisa Loeb, Carmen Electra, Kadeem Hardison, Jason Mewes, and Kevin Smith all made appearances in this installment, helping That ’90s Show feel even more like an extension of That ’70s Show.

Jay Flirting With Donna Is Like Father Like Son

That ’90s Show Really Drew From Michael Kelso’s Character

After discovering that Leia had almost kissed Nate, Jay Kelso decided that the best way to get even was to hook up with her mother, Donna. This led to a hilarious scene in which Jay attempted to seduce Donna while she made a sandwich. Naturally, this didn’t go very well, but

13

Endless Basement Popsicles

Kitty Forman Still Keeps The Basement Freezer Stocked With Popsicles

The teens of That ’70s Show had a never-ending supply of popsicles in the Forman’s basement, and they made great use of this. Eric, Donna, Hyde, Kelso, and Jackie were frequently fishing the treat out of the freezer, enjoying them while they chatted or after a session in the iconic “circle.” Now, it seems that Kitty has returned to keeping the basement well stocked with popsicles, as Leia and her friends are seen eating throughout That ’90s Show seasons 1 and 2.

12

Red’s Frequent “Foot In Ass” Jokes

Red Hasn’t Lost His Edge In That ’90s Show Season 2

There’s no one who could get more colorful while describing how he would put his foot up someone’s ass as Red Forman, and this hasn’t changed in That ’90s Show. While Red’s most memorable catchphrase began simply as a standard threat to his son, Eric, it eventually evolved. By the events of That ’90s Show season 2, the old man threatened to put his foot in the asses of Leia’s friends, Bob Pinciotti, a spiritual healer, and anyone else he deems too annoying to tolerate.

11

More Bad Ideas During “Circle” Time

The That ’90s Show Gang Still Frequented The Circle In Season 2

Another running gag of That ’70s Show is the “circle,” which sees the gang of teenagers sit in a circle around the camera in a room full of smoke as the view pivots between them. It’s meant to be a tongue-in-cheek way to indicate that the characters are smoking weed, allowing for some of the most hilarious moments of That ’70s Show. That ’90s Show season 1 brought back this same mechanic, but now that Leia is a pot-smoking pro in season 2, the circle is seen even more often.

10

Seth Green’s Mitch Makes A Return Appearance

Eric’s Old Rival Is Still Hanging Around Point Place

Mitch was the outrageous, over-the-top rival to Eric in That ’70s Show, who wanted nothing more than to beat the Forman teenager and walk away with his smoking-hot Donna. The character, played by Seth Green, made a few appearances throughout the series, making his cameo in That ’90s Show all the more welcome. In the 1990s, Mitch was the manager of a Hot Topic and Gwen and Leia’s boss until he fired the former for fraternizing with the hunky employees of Abercrombie & Fitch.

9

Jay’s Kelso Family Heirloom

After Nate and Nikki broke up in That ’90s Show, Jay was nice enough to lend his best friend a pornographic video to help him get over it. The tape did the trick, but Nate was reluctant to give it back since he hoped to use it again next time his heartbreak got him down. When he explained this, Jay hilariously called the tape a “Kelso family heirloom.” Given what we know about Michael Kelso in That ’70s Show, this makes a disturbing amount of sense.

8

Kitty’s Home Decor

Kitty’s Home Has Gone Through Changes, But There Are Some Familiar Items Throughout

The Forman house has gone through some changes since That ’70s Show, and Kitty has upgraded much of her furniture to fit with the ’90s. However, there are several bits and bobs throughout the house that find their roots in the parent series. It was evident in That ’90s Show season 1 that Kitty had moved her old couch to the basement, and there are other features of the That ’70s Show house hidden down there as well. Then, upstairs, many of the same curios cover the shelves, including Kitty’s little ducks and chicks on the kitchen shelves.

7

Relationship Talk While Playing Basketball

The Forman’s Driveway Is A Great Place To Talk Things Out

The basketball hoop in the Forman’s driveway got a lot of use in That ’70s Show, and Eric and Donna especially did a lot of bonding while playing some one-on-one. It’s a nostalgic sight to see the same hoop in That ’90s Show and even more so to see other romantic relationships hashed out while tossing a basketball back and forth. In That ’90s Show season 2, it was Nikki and Nate who discussed their love life in this way. Of course, it seems the pair’s romance might not work out, but their shared respect over a casual game is still a comfort.

6

Midge’s Infidelity Is Referenced

That ’90s Show Season 2 Has Finally Mentioned Midge

Red and Bob’s bizarre rivalry has only grown now that they share a granddaughter, which leads to a few arguments in That ’90s Show. At one point in season 2, Bob accused Red of trying to steal important moments with Leia, noting that he is her grandpa, too. When everyone gave him a look, Bob added that “Midge promised,” referencing Donna’s mother, who was notably promiscuous during the events of That ’70s Show.

5

The Grandparents Shuffling Seats In The Vista Cruiser

One of the most notable Easter eggs of That ’90s Show season 1 was Red giving Leia Eric’s old Vista Cruiser, and the car has continued to be a feature in season 2. Of course, Leia hasn’t yet turned 16, so she can’t quite drive on her own. Luckily for her, she had three grandparents in That ’90s Show season 2 to teach her how to drive. During this sequence, Red, Bob, and Kitty shuffled seats while Leia drove, and the way these scenes were clipped was deeply remniscent of the classic opening them for That ’70s Show.

4

Kitty’s “Distant” Mother

Kitty’s Complicated Relationship With Her Mother Was Mentioned In That ’90s Show

Kitty’s mother, played by Betty White in That ’70s Show, was a very critical and downright unpleasant woman. This was a hilarious contrast with Kitty’s own personality, as well as that of the actor who portrayed her. That ’90s Show season 1 made a subtle reference to White’s That ’70s Show character with a sweet picture in the background, but season 2 instead drew attention to her harsher aspects. The spiritual leader Kitty hired, played by Will Forte, mentions that Kitty’s mother had been “distant,” a truth that, to Kitty, proved that the man wasn’t a fraud.

3

Kitty’s Joke About Laurie Being “Social”

Looks Like Laurie Had A Lot Of Pregnancy Scares In The 1990s

In That ’90s Show season 2, episode 7, “Baby-Baby-Baby,” Nikki and Nate had a pregnancy scare, which Kitty was only too happy to help out with. She offered up a stash of pregnancy tests, explaining that she had them because her daughter Laurie had also been “social” back in the day. This was a clear reference to the character’s promiscuity in That ’70s Show, which was always the center of jokes regarding Laurie’s character.

2

Red’s Heart Attack Continues His That ‘70s Show Story

Red’s Heart Troubles Have Continued Into The 1990s

At the end of That ’70s Show season 5, Red suffered a heart attack when Fez told him that he had married Laurie so that he wouldn’t be deported back to his home country (which remains a mystery to this day). While he was ultimately fine, this was a big scare for the Forman family, and Red had to make a lot of changes to his lifestyle in the subsequent season. A similar story was repeated in That ’90s Show season 2, since Red again experienced symptoms of a heart attack and had to be taken to the hospital when he heard Jay and Leia planning to take their relationship to the next level.

1

The Return Of Wayne Knight

Wayne Knight Made A New Cameo In That ’90s Show Season 2

After heading to the hospital in That ’90s Show season 2, Red was roomed up with the talkative Bruce. Red naturally found this man very annoying, but he was ultimately inspired by Bruce’s lesson about living life to the fullest while he could. This inspired Red to surprise Kitty with two tickets to Paris. Though Bruce wasn’t in That ’70s Show, the actor who plays him, Wayne Knight, was.

Knight played an angel in That ’70s Show season 4, episode 1, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” who guided Eric through an alternate future in which he and Donna had never kissed. This makes the actor’s appearance in That ’90s Show rather fitting. Not only was he an especially prominent figure in the 1990s, but Knight was the perfect person to guide Red through this period in his life, paying off his That ’70s Show role as an Easter egg.
