Supernatural‘s season 16, if it were to happen, would only work with one main villain. Supernatural season 16 is already a hard sell. The show’s 15-season run told an epic story of brotherhood, magic, and heart. It had some of the saddest character deaths within CW’s catalog of shows as well as some of the most memorable monsters before its long-discussed ending. Therefore, adding a 16th season would be difficult as the story of the Winchester brothers has already been completed.

That being said, if the Winchesters did return for Supernatural season 16, the main antagonist would need to be powerful considering what the characters have already faced. The brothers took on monsters and gods from several pantheons throughout the series, such as the Norse and the Greek. As a result, Supernatural‘s only option for a season 16 antagonist is one they have used before that, simply, cannot be outdone by any other monster.

Supernatural Season 16’s Villain Can’t Outdo God, So Shouldn’t Try

Supernatural Established That God Was One Of The Most Powerful Beings In Its Universe

Supernatural‘s version of God, aka Chuck (Rob Benedict), cannot be surpassed regarding power level, making him the only option for season 16’s villain. Though the series mentions and features several deities, the lore of the world establishes Chuck, who is actually the Christian God in disguise, as one of the most powerful beings in the cosmos. His powers already proved to be nearly unbeatable in season 15, where he was the main villain.

As the series has already done Chuck as the antagonist, it would make no sense to attempt to go beyond him. Any other being has either already been slain by the Winchesters, such as the gods of the other pantheons, or has no reason to stand against them, such as Amara. If Supernatural season 16 featured a villain lower than Chuck in that world, the stakes of the story would feel discordant from previous seasons, which only built up its threats. Not only that, but having Chuck return would fix some of the problems with Supernatural‘s season 15 ending.

Chuck’s defeat before Supernatural‘s season 15 ending was passed over too quickly but could be rectified if he returned for season 16. Chuck’s defeat came from a combination of wit and might, with the Winchesters misdirecting him long enough to give Jack (Alexander Calvert) an opening. Once Jack had that opening, he used his new abilities as a power vacuum to drain Chuck of his powers, making him the new God and leaving Chuck mortal.

While the quick ending was necessary considering the season’s limited time, it was not satisfying. The Winchesters’ scheme should not have worked considering Chuck’s omnipotence. Having him be so easily fooled and distracted took away from the level of dread the season had built up for him. This is especially important considering that he was the last monster the Winchesters needed to defeat to gain freedom. Chuck, however, was explicitly left alive at the end of the series, allowing Supernatural season 16 to use him with little impediment.

God’s Supernatural Season 16 Would Be Very Simple To Explain

God’s Return Would Make Sense If The Season Is Based In Heaven

Chuck returning as the villain for Supernatural season 16 would be easy to explain considering where the story last left him and where it would likely pick up from. After the Winchesters defeated Chuck, Jack told Sam (Jared Padalecki) that his powers would not return to him. However, Jack also only absorbed a part of Chuck’s power. As Chuck is one of the strongest beings in Supernatural‘s universe, it would not be a stretch to establish that Chuck still had power but could not access it. Chuck could live out his mortal days, but regain those powers once he “dies”.

Chuck’s role as the antagonist would also work easily with where the story would likely pick up. Supernatural season 15’s characters are mostly in Heaven, with Sam reuniting with Dean (Jensen Ackles) during the finale. Chuck’s return would then fit well as he would return to Heaven having regained his strength, forcing the Winchesters to battle him once more with old and new friends. It would increase the stakes of the story, as the Winchesters no longer have the home-field advantage and must master any power they have in Heaven fast, making Supernatural season 16 both nostalgic and unique.
