Bob Odenkirk is confirmed to return to the action genre for the long-awaited Nobody 2, and the sequel can finally solve the biggest lingering mystery from the first movie. Released in 2021, Nobody starred Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell, a seemingly mild-mannered suburban family man who turned out to have a storied history as a government assassin. He took on the entire Russian mafia in what turned out to be one of the most spectacular action movies of the past decade.

A sequel has been in development ever since, but now Nobody 2 has been officially greenlit with Odenkirk confirmed to reprise his role as Hutch. The Night Comes for Us’ Timo Tjahjanto is taking over the director’s chair from the first film’s Ilya Naishuller. The original movie’s writer, John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, is back to pen the script with Odenkirk, Kate’s Umair Aleem, and Jack Ryan’s Aaron Rabin. Not only is this sequel another chance to see Odenkirk in action-hero mode; it’s also a great chance to follow up on the first film’s best unsolved mystery.

Nobody 2 Can Reveal Who Made The Call To Free Hutch

Bob Odenkirk smoking and handcuffed in Nobody

The first Nobody movie opens in media res with a bruised and bloodied Hutch sitting in an interrogation room, telling the detectives that he’s “nobody.” When this opening scene is revisited at the end of the movie, the detectives receive a mysterious phone call and Hutch is suddenly released without charges. While it might seem like Hutch was saved by an old government associate, the movie insinuates that the person who got Hutch out of jail isn’t a friendly.

Instead, the call was implied to have been made by someone who’s still after Hutch – they need him to be a free man, so they can get to him – but it wasn’t confirmed. The now-greenlit sequel can address this mystery. Do Hutch’s old employers at the government wetwork agency want to rub him out for blowing his cover? Are there some powerful associates of the Russian mobsters that Hutch killed who are out for vengeance? The upcoming Nobody sequel needs to reveal the identity of this enigmatic figure.

The ending of Nobody, set three months after the main action, shows that Hutch and his family have resumed their ordinary lives and they’re looking to buy a new house. However, then Hutch receives a phone call, suggesting he’s not out of the woods yet: either he’s back to being a gun-for-hire or there are still bad guys coming after him. This ending tease is the perfect springboard to get Nobody 2 off to an exciting, action-packed start.
