Doctor Who season 15 will give one seemingly minor character from season 14 an important role. Season 14 focused on new companion Ruby Sunday’s search for her birth family. Like every Doctor Who companion in the post-2005 continuation of the long-running sci-fi series, Ruby was torn between staying with her family and traveling with the Doctor and occasionally came home when a story demanded it. Before meeting the Doctor, Ruby lived with her adoptive mother, Carla, and grandmother, Cherry, who was often bedridden, and was friendly with her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Flood.

All of the characters from Ruby’s previous life seemed to be minor, though the series has built up a mystery around Mrs. Flood’s true identity since she revealed she was familiar with the existence of the TARDIS at the end of the Christmas special. Two of Doctor Who‘s best stories of the season centered involved Ruby’s family. “73 Yards” included a subplot in which alternate-timeline Ruby was completely rejected by her adoptive family, and both Carla and Cherry got a death scene in “Empire of Death” before being resurrected and welcoming Ruby’s birth mother into their home.

Cherry Sunday Is The Only Doctor Who Character Who Knows Something’s Up With Mrs. Flood

She Has Yet To Inform Anyone Of What Happened Between Them

Mrs. Flood displayed a darker side to Cherry after being asked to sit with her while Carla ran to UNIT headquarters with Ruby. This was the first of several clues to Doctor Who’s Mrs. Flood’s true identity, making it clear she wasn’t the kindly neighbor she claimed to be. She refused to get Carla a cup of tea and later, as Sutekh approached, declared she would destroy God’s golden gates of Heaven and lamented that she would die before her plans for Cherry could be completed.

Nobody else was there when Mrs. Flood made these pronouncements, and Cherry has yet to mention them. It’s possible that she doesn’t fully remember and that her memory will return during season 15. Kate Lethbridge-Stewart acknowledged that her memories after being turned to dust were hazy, so it’s possible that memories of just before it happened are too, or that Cherry thinks she dreamed the incident with Mrs. Flood but will change her mind when something else happens that demonstrates her neighbor’s evil streak.

Cherry Sunday Deserves A Bigger Role In Doctor Who Season 15

She Should Have More To Do Than Beg For a Cup Of Tea

Doctor Who Cherry Sunday smiling from her bed

Cherry Sunday didn’t have much to do during season 14, but she deserved more than what her story has allowed. For the most part, she had only two lines in episodes where she appeared: asking for a cup of tea that she never got and warning Carla and Ruby that the Doctor was a source of trouble they didn’t need. Her insistence that the Doctor was trouble was particularly intriguing, as it was never explained what made her feel that way.

There may be more to Cherry than has been revealed so far, which could make for a compelling twist as season 15 progresses. It also has not been explained what illness causes her to be bedridden most of the time, which could also play into what’s going on between her and Mrs. Flood. Doctor Who could take this character in several interesting directions during season 15, especially now that Cherry is the only one who knows that Mrs. Flood isn’t as nice a person as she seems.
