As Godzilla invades the Marvel Universe, he shows off a new side to his atomic breath. Later this year, Marvel will be bringing their mid-1970s Godzilla title back into print in a new omnibus edition. To build hype, Marvel is releasing variant covers featuring Godzilla throwing down with Marvel’s biggest icons. The cover to Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9 shows Godzilla using his breath in a most unexpected way.

Marvel unveiled the covers in a post on their website. Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9, which will be written by Jed MacKay, features a Godzilla variant by Taurin Clarke. The cover features the King of Monsters fighting Khonshu, Moon Knight’s patron deity. The surrounding city is in ruins. People and vehicles flee in panic around the two titans.

The cover makes it clear the fight is not going well for Khonshu, as Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath on the god–and it seems to be having an effect.

Will Godzilla Return to the Modern Marvel Universe?

Godzilla Marvel Omnibus Cover 2

2024 marks 70 years of Godzilla. The iconic monster has towered over pop culture, providing the template for nearly every kaiju to follow. In the mid-1970s, Marvel obtained the license to produce comics starring Godzilla. The 24-issue series, written by Doug Moench and drawn by Herb Trimpe, chronicled Godzilla’s adventures across the Marvel Universe. Godzilla would meet several Marvel icons, including Nick Fury and the Fantastic Four. Marvel lost the rights by decade’s end, and the series has been out of print–and hard to find, ever since.

So far, Marvel has remained coy on whether the new license with Toho includes the right to produce new stories starring Godzilla. If not, then these variant covers are the next best thing. Since Marvel’s original Godzilla series concluded, a number of new characters have arisen, all perfect for a match-up against the King of Monsters. Moon Knight was around when Godzilla last visited the Marvel Universe, but they never crossed paths. The cover to Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9 shows this hypothetical conflict, but not in the way fans expect.

Godzilla Minus One and the Atomic Breath

Godzilla’s assault on Moon Knight is brutal, taking it all the way to his patron god. It can be assumed that Moon Knight fell earlier in battle, and Khonshu has stepped in to handle matters. Unfortunately, it does not look to be going well for Khonshu either. Godzilla’s atomic breath is his key weapon, capable of leveling cities. Now, as Godzilla invades the Marvel Universe, his atomic breath can also humble gods like Khonshu. Godzilla is extremely powerful, but his return to Marvel has shown he may be capable of killing a god.
