While Wolverine‘s healing factor may have withstood some of the deadliest weapons (and deadliest individuals) in Marvel lore, his new battle against Godzilla pushes its limits like only the King of Monsters’ atomic breath can. Wolverine is taking on Godzilla as part of Marvel’s celebrations for the upcoming release of Godzilla #1 Facsimile Edition and Godzilla: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus.

Over September, Marvel has revealed it will be publishing 21 variant covers showing its iconic heroes going toe-to-toe with Godzilla. The epic collaboration with Toho International brings Godzilla back into the Marvel Universe to honor its 1977-1979 series from Doug Moench and Herb Trimpe, which saw Godzilla take on famous faces including the Avengers and Fantastic Four. However, one particularly eye-catching cover comes from Roge Antonio, with the variant for Wolverine #2 showing Godzilla stripping the flesh from Wolverine’s bones.

Wolverine can famously survive almost anything, so it’s surprising that Marvel is willing to admit – even in variant cover form – that the X-Men’s indestructible brawler wouldn’t stand a chance against the King of Monsters. While there’s a definite size advantage to Godzilla, Wolverine has spent his entire career fighting gigantic Sentinels, and his unbreakable adamantium-coated claws and speedy healing factor might have made some fans think he had a chance in this 1 vs 1 fight to the death.

Wolverine Just Delivered the Defining Quote of His Existence (Movies, Comics, Everything)

50 years since he was first introduced to the Marvel Universe, Wolverine just got his best quote of all time, perfectly defining his journey.

Godzilla’s Atomic Breath Means Instant Death for Wolverine

Logan Can Survive a Lot, But Not This Type of Incineration

sentinel kills wolverine in days of future past

While Wolverine can survive a lot of damage, he’s not immortal. Indeed, Roge Antonio’s art recreates Logan’s most iconic comic death – having his flesh incinerated by a Sentinel in Days of Future Past (Chris Claremont and John Byrne.) Wolverine’s healing factor stems from his bone marrow, with his blood carrying its special properties all around his body. While the strength of Wolverine’s healing can vary according to his recent caloric intake, Marvel has been relatively consistent that an incinerating burst of heat is still deadly.

Most recently, 2021’s Inferno #1 (Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti) saw Wolverine meet the same fate at the hands of Nimrod. Not only did Nimrod kill Wolverine with a burst of Godzilla-style energy, but since the X-Men kept resurrecting Logan and sending him back to try again, Nimrod killed him multiple times, each time taking his adamantium-coated skeleton to create a new ‘Sentinel Zero’ unit.

While Wolverine might still be able to do some damage once he’s actually inside Godzilla, Marvel’s cover suggests he’d never get that far. Of course, if Marvel follows up its Godzilla covers with a full crossover series, it’s possible Wolverine will get another shot at actually doing some damage to the ultimate kaiju.

Wolverine #2 is coming October 16 from Marvel Comics.
