Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for the Dark Matter season 1 finale!

Dark Matter star Joel Edgerton has addressed the show’s ending, alongside the potential for season 2 and how the series could continue. The ending of Dark Matter saw the original Jason reunited with Daniela and Charlie, going through the Box into a new world after their original one is overrun with hundreds of other versions of himself. The show seemingly ends on a definitive note for the Dessen family, who enter a new world in the multiverse, prepared to start a new life together.

Speaking with Screen Rant, however, Edgerton addressed how Dark Matter ended while also explaining how he thinks the show could continue into season 2. The actor said that, because of the number of characters and concepts introduced in season 1, there’s plenty of potential for the story to continue in a variety of interesting ways. Check out what Edgerton had to say below:

You got to keep the gang together, you know, what I mean? Who knows? It’s funny, every time I think about the possibilities, the infinite nature of what is possible, and what’s exciting it really, really gets the creative juices flowing. And what is also exciting actually is hearing what other people think. Everybody’s wired to think differently. I remember someone saying, but how do we know even at the end that, Daniela has got the right Jason and that question breaks your brain. I think the wonderful thing is, season one was really about Jason getting his life back from himself. We’ve now gotten to know more characters through the process and really particularly gotten to know and love Daniela and Amanda, and Charlie and Leighton and Ryan. There’s sort of a smorgasbord of characters now that I think there’s any number of ways that it can go and I’m excited for what happens as soon as anyone’s willing to pull the trigger.

How Dark Matter Season 2 Could Happen (& If Jason Should Come Back)

Dark Matter provided a definitive ending to Jason’s attempt at getting back to his family, giving them a happy ending as they search for a new home. However, the show also establishes that other characters are still interacting with the multiverse, such as Amanda, Ryan, and Voight, indicating their stories might not be over yet. Given how neatly the main story of season 1 ended, a potential season 2 would be perfect for other characters to take the spotlight instead of the Dessen family.

One major way Dark Matter season 2 could happen is with Jason2’s Amanda and the original Ryan, both of whom ended up in the same utopian world together. It’s possible the latter wants to try and go back home after being left behind, a journey that could make for an interesting follow-up. Not only would it provide a new lens to view the story, but it could also reveal what happened to the original world the show started in once hundreds of Jasons began showing up.

Blake Crouch is both the author of the 2016 novel, as well as the showrunner for Apple TV+’s Dark Matter adaptation, but Crouch has made some changes.

Another potential development is for Dark Matter‘s cast to go the ensemble route, following a variety of different stories across the multiverse with people and worlds introduced in season 1. While this would give season 2 a different feel compared to the first story, it would also provide closure for everyone else in the series without jeopardizing the happy ending Jason and his family got. With plenty of possibilities for where the story could go next, another season with a different story is very much possible.
