Avatar 3 gets a new production update from star Sam Worthington. After the mega success of his original movie in 2009, filmmaker James Cameron returned to the world of Pandora with his hit sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, in 2022. The follow-up was a major success, solidifying plans for a trio of new entries in the franchise. Avatar 3‘s release date was originally set for December 2024, but the film is now expected to bow in theaters in December 2025, continuing the story of the Sully family.

In a recent interview with ExtraTV while at the premiere for Horizon: An American Saga, Worthington shares an update on Avatar 3, confirming that pick-up filming on the sequel continues.

The actor doesn’t reveal when filming is expected to officially wrap, but does say that he’ll be heading back to do some more filming as Jake in the near future. Check out his comment below:

“They’re still filming. They’re down in New Zealand filming more of three. I think I go in tomorrow to do some more, so yeah we just keep going.”

Sam Worthington’s Character Still Has An Important Role To Play

While Jake serves as the central character in the original film, the Avatar: The Way of Water cast introduces some new members of the Sully family, with Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) becoming a key figure in the narrative. This new focus on Lo’ak’s journey is sure to continue in future films, especially since the character is set to take over from Jake as the narrator of the upcoming sequel. Jake, however, is sure to remain a key figure in Cameron’s epic saga.

7 Clues To Jake Sully’s Replacement In Avatar 3 After The Way Of Water Setup

Although Jake Sully was the hero of Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water already hinted that Avatar 3 would replace the franchise’s protagonist.

The Avatar: The Way of Water ending sees Jake and his family officially welcomed into the Metkayina clan after their help repelling human forces and destroying the SeaDragon. The final shot, which mirrors the end of the original Avatar, certainly suggests that Jake’s battle against the humans is just beginning, and that he’ll do whatever it takes to protect his family and his home. Since Quaritch (Stephen Lang) remains alive at the end of the most recent sequel, it seems likely that some kind of rematch is on the horizon for the two characters.

Future Avatar films are expected to introduce new Pandoran biomes and Na’vi clans, meaning something will seemingly push Jake and his family away from the reef-dwelling Metkayina clan. The third film will introduce a fire-worshipping clan called the Ash People, and they’re expected to be less friendly, suggesting Jake will have to balance his struggle against invading human forces with antagonistic Na’vi as well. Many questions remain about Jake’s future in Avatar 3 and beyond, but he’s sure to remain a key character moving forward.
