Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for the Dark Matter season 1 finale!

Dark Matter star Joel Edgerton and showrunner Blake Crouch have addressed the possibility of the series getting renewed for season 2, explaining what the possibilities for a continuation could be. Dark Matter season 1 ended with Jason taking Daniela and Charlie through the Box into another world, escaping the many other versions of himself that also came back. While the new world the Dessens went to was never shown, it’s implied they managed to get somewhere they could thrive together as a family.

Speaking with Screen Rant in seperate interviews, Crouch and Edgerton opened up about the possibility of Dark Matter season 2, and what potential there might be for future stories. In one interview, the showrunner explained how the focus of season 1 was on adapting his book of the same name, leaving little room for a potential continuation. However, in a separate interview, the series’ star indicated that, with the right story, the show could keep going. Check out what Crouch and Edgerton had to say below:

Blake Crouch: Obviously we know these characters really well by now. And yeah, there’s a little bit of an open endedness [and] you’ve read my novels — there’s always an open endedness in my novels. I want the reader to continue the journey in their own mind. As for a season 2, I think we have to let the series play out [and] we have to see where things stand and just do a gut check. See if there’s an appetite for that. But right now, I think we’re just really excited to let everyone finish this first season, which is just the book. We didn’t leave anything out. We didn’t hold anything back for a season 2. Everything in the book that we loved is in this season.

Joel Edgerton: There are almost too many possibilities. When you’re dealing with a contraption like the box, or if you’re talking about a show that deals with time travel, it’s almost like there’s too many possibilities. The question is what is the best direction to move in? The great thing is, Blake is not somebody who just had one novel in him. Obviously, he’s written many, many great speculative science fiction novels. He’s got an incredible, creative, elastic brain. And I know that he’s already thinking about it. So the moment there’s any word to say, “Let’s do it,” he’ll be in the science lab, tinkering away, working out what it is, and I guarantee he’ll be inviting people like myself into that process. It’s a whole undiscovered land now, because in the first season, he was working off the novel, and there’s the terror and the excitement of looking into an open space or [a] blank page as to what could be next. So the short answer is I think everyone had such a great time that we’ll absolutely do more if the appetite is there, and it seems like the show’s done very well.

Should Dark Matter Return For Season 2?

Dark Matter ended with Jason’s original universe now occupied by hundreds of versions of himself, some of whom are still trying to get Daniela and Charlie for themselves. Alongside this original world are the one Jason2 left, as well as the one Amanda stayed in, seemingly the same world where the original Ryan ended up. This is in addition to Leighton traveling across worlds in the Box, as well as an alternate Blaire seemingly making her way back home. These scattered stories could make for a strong season 2, exploring many different branches of reality.

Apple TV+’s Dark Matter’s compelling drama is not only driven by intriguing sci-fi concepts but also by the brilliant performances of cast members.

Since Dark Matter has made changes to the book already, continuing Jason’s story beyond the page is within the realm of possibility. However, if the show reveals even more dangers for the Dessen family to contend with, it could end up being a hopeless endeavor as they try to find stability in a new world. While the family exploring the multiverse could be interesting, it would also put them in danger once again, despite the hopeful ending of season 1.

Instead, Dark Matter season 2 could focus on one of the unresolved storylines for other characters in the show. The continuation with the most potential is that of Amanda and Ryan, with the former trying to help him get back to his original world. This could make for all sorts of multiverse chaos, providing a new adventure without disrupting the ending Jason and his family got. However, with other characters like Blaire and Leighton also in play, the opportunity to tell a story beyond the Dessens in season 2 would make a continuation worthwhile.
