The latest incarnation of Marvel‘s Doctor Octopus has turned one of the MCU’s greatest villains into a next-level threat. Doctor Octopus has proven himself over the years as one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes. While he looks silly, his crimes and evil plots have proven that he’s Spider-Man’s strongest villain. Now, his most nefarious scheme has transformed one of Spider-Man’s biggest antagonists into a new kind of threat.

In Superior Spider-Man #8 by Dan Slott and Mark Bagley, Doc Ock’s latest spine-tingling power allows him to take over New York City, as he connects his mind to every spider in the metropolis, using them to control whoever they can crawl inside. The resulting hive mind includes J. Jonah Jameson, or as Peter dubs him, “J. Jonah Joctopus.”

Jameson’s new form, as a hybrid of the Daily Bugle’s Spider-Man hating Editor-in-Chief with the mind of Otto Octavius, turns him into a serious threat, as he brandishes the iconic villain’s metal arms.

J. Jonah Jameson pitches ideas for Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2.

While Jameson’s design isn’t much different than how he usually looks, the fact that he’s able to use Doc Ock’s arms without much effort is a sight to behold. Of course, his mind is currently being controlled by Otto Octavius, so it would make sense for him to be an expert at controlling them. However, it’s still an interesting sight to witness J. Jonah Jameson taking down the man he’s been calling a menace since the first day he swung through New York to fight crime.

In fact, Jonah’s battle with Spider-Man leads to the Webhead easily being incapacitated. It’s entirely possible that their shared hatred for Spider-Man is what made Jameson’s body the perfect host for Otto’s mind. The two think in tandem regarding how to take Spidey down, so there’s likely little restraint from Jameson’s brain. This is possibly why Otto has chosen Jonah as the person to don his arms rather than Aunt May or Robbie: they have a more positive history with Peter, which could lead to some pushback from their subconscious.

But Jonah Has Proven He Can Be A Hero

J. Jonah Jameson as Headline from Edge of Spider-Verse #4

What’s amusing about Jameson becoming one with Doctor Octopus is how, not too long ago, Marvel revealed that there’s actually a heroic version of the Daily Bugle headliner on the Web of Life and Destiny. 2023’s Edge of Spider-Verse #4 featured a story where J. Jonah Jameson became a Spider-hero called Headline. His powers were essentially the same as Spider-Man’s; however, he boasted a black-and-white newspaper-inspired outfit. This revelation shows that J. Jonah Jameson has a unique place in the world of heroes and villains as he proves he can be an effective ally for either side.

Whether he’s a hero or villain though, it’s interesting to see just how much Jameson has come into play in Spider-Man’s world over the years. He’s gone from being a casual observer to becoming a full-blown supervillain with the help of one of Peter Parker’s greatest foes. With their minds combined, Doctor Octopus has transformed this iconic Marvel antagonist into a huge threat for Spidey, and it will be interesting to see how their combined brains can prove to be a bigger threat for everyone’s favorite Webhead in the future.
