Some Movies Are Memorable Because Of Their Tragic Elements

Tragedy Is A Necessary Part Of Drama

While most of the titles above have tear-jerking moments, many of them would be made worse if they didn’t have their tragic characters or endings. Forrest Gump, for example, chronicles the loving dynamic between Tom Hanks’ Forrest and Robin Wright’s Jenny over several decades, and the emotion of that film is part of why it remains so beloved. Forrest loses people in his life, including his mother, his best friend, and the woman he loves, but his outlook on life remains largely unchanged, and this is part of why the movie is so effective.

The tragedy in a title like Life is Beautiful is part of one of the core themes of the film, which is the enduring power of love and hope even during something as horrible and evil as the Holocaust. For Gladiator, the tragedy is key to Maximus’ (Russell Crowe) entire journey. After he is betrayed and his family is killed, he seeks revenge on the man responsible. Although Maximus dies at the end of Gladiator, the ending isn’t really tragic because the character is shown reuniting with his family in the afterlife.

While most love stories have a happy ending, these tragic tear-jerkers end in sadness – and fans love them for it.

The tragedy of Anakin in Star Wars is part of what is ultimately a six-movie arc. After the deaths of people he cares about, Anakin becomes the evil Darth Vader. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi reveals, however, that goodness remained in Anakin all along, and his redemption is one of the franchise’s most powerful moments. While the images above certainly make for interesting hypothetical changes to some classic films, the titles are probably better off with their tragic elements intact.
