A Quiet Place: Day One star Joseph Quinn has explained how the prequel movie retains one element from the original to make the film even better. The upcoming horror movie follows two people in New York City, Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) and Eric (Quinn) who become trapped when the Death Angels fall from space and begin their invasion of Earth. Because A Quiet Place: Day One‘s story takes place right at the start of the apocalypse, it’s expected to explore how humanity learned to remain quiet to avoid getting killed by the monsterous creatures.

Speaking with ComicBook, Quinn explained how A Quiet Place: Day One maintains minimal dialogue throughout its story, similar to the original, in order to reflect the ongoing apocalyptic scenario. The actor explained how what dialogue there is in the film serves a purpose, utilized sparingly to offer up important information. Check out what Quinn had to say below:

That was a very interesting spot to be in, where the dialogue was very effective, and kind of punched through a lot of subtext. It was very communicative in a way that was urgent, I guess, because the only reason you’re going to talk in an environment like this, which is perilous if you make any noise, is when it’s absolutely urgent. The rest was up to us to kind of fill that in.

Why Minimal Dialogue Will Be Important For A Quiet Place: Day One

The Lack Of Dialogue Maintains Consistency With The Original

Although it takes place at the very start of the apocalypse, promotional material for A Quiet Place: Day One indicates Sam and Eric will quickly learn that noise attracts the Death Angels. While the movie will likely start with plenty of dialogue between characters before New York is attacked, the presence of the franchise’s monsters will likely do away with any unnecessary speaking. This confirmation from Quinn makes a lack of dialogue an important staple of the franchise, even for its forthcoming prequel.

A lack of speaking also means many parts of the movie will need to be displayed visually for the audience, something that further engages them in the world of the story. In addition, A Quiet Place: Day One‘s cast will have to figure out their new world on their own, making what little dialogue there is more suspenseful for knowledgeable viewers. This increases the stakes for the characters when not using words, too, as they’ll have to be creative in their communication without alerting the monsters throughout the city.

Because the movie won’t contain a lot of speaking between characters, it will likely feel similar to the first two films despite taking place at the start of everything that transpired. It’s also possible the particular way it approaches dialogue can inform the upcoming A Quiet Place: Part III when it gets released. For now, though, A Quiet Place: Day One maintaining the same minimal dialogue of the previous movies is a positive sign the film will feel right at home within the expanding post-apocalyptic franchise.
