Monkey Man is available for purchase now, and Screen Rant has a featurette clip from the home release. Dev Patel’s directorial debut is an action-packed story of revenge and an exploration of societal hierarchy, and garnered rave reviews despite a troubled production and a small budget of just $10 million. Patel also co-wrote the script, and starred in the film alongside Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, and Sobhita Dhulipala.

Screen Rant is excited to present a clip from Monkey Man tied to the film’s digital release. When Screen Rant interviewed Dev Patel for Monkey Man, he touched on the negative effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had on production, and the clip goes even further in explaining ways the production had to adapt. Take a look at the clip and get ready to watch Monkey Man at home—available now on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital.

Why Monkey Man 2 Has Huge Potential

The impending digital release of Monkey Man prompts the question of if and when audiences will get to enjoy a Monkey Man 2. A sequel is currently unconfirmed, but the normal conventions of making a follow-up to a successful movie (bigger budgets, more time, etc.) would be especially beneficial in this case, as Monkey Man had a famously troubled production. As seen in the clip above, the production even lost its filming location due to COVID-19, which would be less of an issue for a sequel.

The cursed production of Monkey Man also had a physical toll on its director and star. Patel suffered numerous bodily ailments during production including broken toes, which he even had to work through to finish the film on schedule. The movie also originally had the John Wick stunt team on board and lost them due to the pandemic, raising questions about what might have been (though Patel did find a stellar stunt team for his film). A Monkey Man sequel that affords Patel the time to deal with any mishaps in a safe way and brings in even more stunt legends like the John Wick team could level up its already-praised action.

Of course, as the proverb goes, necessity is the mother of invention. Major difficulties with the mechanical shark during the making of Jaws, for example, limited the amount of screen time it had, ultimately making for a more suspenseful and scarier film. Even if Monkey Man 2 were to avoid all of the issues that plagued the first film, it would likely behoove the creative team to keep in mind how the scrappiness of the first film ended up benefitting the project as a whole—while helping Patel escape his days on set unscathed, of course.
