Kaiju No. 8 episode #12 is set to be one of the last episodes of the series, if not the last, and it’s bound to be a big one after everything that happened in episode #11. Even with the biggest arc in terms of scale now finished, the series isn’t letting up on action or drama, and it will be great to see how that plays out in episode #12.

With Kaiju No. 8 episode #10 seeing Kafka out himself as Kaiju No. 8, Kaiju No. 8 episode #11 saw Kafka be arrested for being a Kaiju and forced his friends and enemies alike to go back and forth on what they should do about him.

What transpired was an episode of Kaiju No. 8 that was surprisingly laid back and focused on character work right before diving right back into action at the very end, and it all came together for an overall great episode that makes for a perfect penultimate episode of the series.

What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #11

Produced by Production I.G; Directed by Ayataka Tanemura

Kaiju No. 8 episode #11, “Kaiju No. 8 Captured”, followed episode #10 with Kafka, now having been exposed as Kaiju No. 8, being arrested by the Defense Force. Despite the circumstances, Mina told Kafka that she believed he was innocent and would do everything she could to help him, and Hoshina and the Third Division even saluted Kafka as he was sent off to headquarters. Thanks to that, even with tears in his eyes, Kafka could hold out hope that he would get through this and return to the Defense Force as a soldier.

Following Kafka’s arrest, everyone in the Third Division started working to try and get Kafka free. Mina pulled every file she had on Kafka to draw up a report; Aoi attempted to get a friend from the JSDF to help them out; Kikoru even went to Isao Shinomiya, the leader of the Defense Force, to personally ask him to give Kafka leniency. Unfortunately, X-rays of Kafka revealed that his heart had transformed into a Kaiju core, so as far as Isao was concerned, Kafka was no longer human and needed to be treated as a Kaiju.

Following Isao’s declaration of Kafka Hibino being a Kaiju and not a human, Isao challenged Kafka to a fight to give him a chance to prove his humanity. Kafka tried not to use his Kaiju powers, but with Isao using a suit and pair of gauntlets made from the legendary Kaiju No. 2, Kafka had to transform to protect himself. Upon doing so, though, the bug Kaiju that gave Kafka his powers appeared in his mind and overwhelmed him, and as a result, Kafka entered a berserker-like state in his Kaiju form and attacked Isao with the intent to kill.

Kaiju No. 8 Brings Back Its Biggest Mystery in a Major Way

The bug Kaiju returns in Kafka's mind

With everything that happened in Kaiju No. 8 episode #11, one major takeaway was the return of the bug Kaiju that started everything. The bug Kaiju had been largely forgotten about after the premiere, but not only is it back, but Kaiju No. 8 hints that the bug Kaiju is connected to the numbered Kaiju in some way, which means it’s likely a big player in the world of Kaiju No. 8, in some way. Episode #11 does a great job of adding to the mystery of the bug Kaiju, and it hopefully won’t be the last time it’s addressed.

Kaiju No. 8 Episode #11 Is The Perfect Segway into the Season Finale

Kafka enters his berserker state against Isao

Kaiju No. 8 is another episode that succeeds in both writing and animation. Episode #11 did a great job of continuing the drama of Kafka’s arrest, and going off of that, everyone working together to try and save Kafka was a perfect showing of how important he was to the Defense Force. Even if Kafka can’t fight as a human, he’s still done a lot to become someone people can admire, and seeing the lengths everyone goes in response to that is nothing but great.

As for animation, it was another episode that’s an easy contender for the anime’s best. While there wasn’t as much action as in previous episodes, the fight between Kafka and Isao perfectly illustrated Isao’s power with the gorgeous animation accompanying his overpowering of Kafka, the only thing matching it being the animation and direction of Kafka’s Kaiju form entering a berserker state. Between the great character work and incredible animation, Kaiju No. 8 episode #11 does a perfect job of building into the finale, and with any luck, Kaiju No. 8 episode #12 will more than live up to that.

Be sure to watch Kaiju No. 8 episode #12 when it releases on Saturday, June 29.
