The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri address a potential romance between Carmy and Sydney in season 3. Premiered in 2022, FX’s acclaimed series follows an award-winning chef, Carmy, and his sous Sydney, as he takes over his late brother’s Italian beef sandwich shop and turns it into a fine-dining restaurant. White and Edebiri, who have both won Emmys for their performances, star as Carmy and Sydney, and in The Bear season 3, there is a potential for new developments in their relationship.

During a recent press conference (via Vanity Fair), White and Edebiri were asked if there is any potential for a romance between Carmy and Sydney in The Bear season 3, and they both answered with a resounding “No.” White went on to elaborate, and the two also discussed how Carmy and Sydney’s official partnership agreement, as revealed by The Bear season 3 trailer, will affect their professional relationship. Read their full comments below:

White: There was no talk in the rooms about any romantic implications [between Carmy and Sydney].

Edebiri: Carmy is somebody that I think she’s really looked up to, but now is sort of in the thick of doing business with and it’s, I think, a lot more chaotic than she might have idealized before they really started working together.

White: [Carmy is] not the best communicator, but he will often make a sort of grand gesture like that to try and communicate to Syd or the kitchen or whomever. He’s got a lot going on in his mind all the time, and people aren’t always aware of exactly what’s going on. You’ll see how obviously that affects Carmen and Syd’s relationship, but I think Carmen’s trying to welcome her in a little bit was the point of the partnership agreement.

Why A Carmy-Sydney Romance Wouldn’t Work In The Bear Season 3

Carmy Clearly Isn’t Ready For A Romantic Relationship

In The Bear, a potential romantic relationship between Carmy and Sydney is a topic that has intrigued and been debated by viewers. Their dynamic is layered with complexity, primarily shaped by their shared passion for the culinary arts and restaurant business, their aspirations of earning a Michelin star, and the intense environment of running a kitchen. The chemistry between Carmy and Sydney is also palpable, which has sparked speculation about a romantic relationship. Their interactions often include intense eye contact, deep conversations about their culinary philosophies, and moments of mutual support that hint at a deeper connection.

However, Carmy clearly isn’t ready for a romantic relationship. In season 2, Carmy reluctantly begins a relationship with Claire, which comes to an abrupt end during The Bear season 2 ending. Trapped inside the walk-on refrigerator due to a broken handle during the restaurant’s soft opening, Carmy rants about how his relationship with Claire is responsible for ruining his focus in the kitchen, which she overhears. Following the handle mishap, season 3 will see Carmy with a renewed sense of focus and intensity, and he won’t make the mistake of entering another relationship that could jeopardize his focus.

The Bear Recap: 10 Things To Remember Before Season 3

As season 3 of The Bear quickly approaches, there are some key things to remember about Carmy, Sydney, the restaurant, and the rest of the team.

In season 3, Carmy and Sydney’s professional partnership will likely continue to overshadow any potential romantic developments. According to White, there hasn’t been any talk about a romantic relationship between Carmy and Sydney, meaning it was likely never the writers’ intent. In turn, even though fans may want to see it, a romance may seem out of place storywise. While the show may have incidentally hinted at a potential romance, The Bear should continue portraying Carmy and Sydney’s relationship with subtlety and leaving much to the audience’s interpretation.
