The best Green Lantern costume of all time is hard to pin down, but for readers raised on ’90s comics, there’s really only one choice. Kyle Rayner was the last of the Lanterns after Hal Jordan was possessed by Parallax and destroyed the Green Lantern Corps, and an exciting cosplay brings his original costume brilliantly to life, courtesy of cosplay artist Notcos.

Posting on Instagram, Notcos showed off an excellent version of Kyle Rayner’s classic 1990s outfit. One of the most exciting things about cosplay is its ability to remind fans of classic and deep-cut comic lore, and this build does precisely that.

Notcos gets all the little details right, from the metallic mask and gloves to the interpretation of the black-and-white Green Lantern logo Kyle Rayner wore on his costume. The long black hair completes the look, making Notcos the pitch-perfect recreation of Kyle Rayner in three dimensions.

Notcos’ rendition of Kyle Rayner’s mask in particular is astonishing for its level of comic-accuracy, with the build perfectly molded to be instantly recognizable as the character’s most iconic look. Notcos captures the dynamic design of Kyle Rayner’s Green Lantern costume of the 1990s, resulting in a design the freelance artist-turned-hero would be proud of. Notably, Kyle’s costume was actually designed by himself, once his girlfriend Alex encouraged him to craft a Green Lantern costume of his own after initially wearing Hal Jordan’s classic costume.

Kyle Rayner wore the costume portrayed by Notcos from 1994 to 2002, with the outfit speaking to his individualism as a character. Kyle received his Green Lantern ring simply by being in the right place at the right time, being gifted the last of the Lantern rings following Hal Jordan/Parallax’s destruction of the power battery on Oa. In that way, Kyle became the “Last Green Lantern” for a time. Due to his status as being the only being in the universe carrying a Green Lantern ring, Kyle was named the “Torch-Bearer” for continuing the Lanterns’ legacy during their darkest period.

A Reminder Of Its Popularity

Considered overdue for a triumphant comeback by many long-time fans, Kyle’s status in the DCU has been in flux in the years since Hal Jordan’s retirn, as the character has taken on different costumes and abilities throughout the last two decades. Despite the different looks, Kyle’s most distinctive costume remains the classic one designed by artist Darryl Banks in the 1990s. While the best Green Lantern will always be hotly debated by DC Comics fans, one thing is for sure: cosplayer artist Notcos absolutely nailed his cosplay build of Kyle Rayner.
