Following a small break, One Piece’s anime finally returned with episode #1109, and it did an incredible job of building up anticipation for episode #1110’s release. Episode #1109 marks the point where the action in the Egghead Island arc starts to ramp up, and it will be great to see how that plays out in episode #1110 and beyond.

One Piece episode #1109 continued the Seraphim’s mysterious assault against the Straw Hats and the Satellites, and while they both still had their reservations about it, Luffy and Zoro had to form a truce with Lucci and Kaku to fight the Seraphim.

It was another episode of the One Piece anime with a lot of great action, comedy, and especially animation, and as always, it leaves a lot for people to be excited about with episode #1110’s release.

What Happened In One Piece Episode #1109?

Produced by Toei Animation; Directed by Nanami Michibita

One Piece episode #1109, “A Tough Decision! An Unusual United Front!”, continued Luffy and Zoro’s fight against S-Bear and S-Hawk, with S-Hawk, specifically, giving Zoro trouble with his artificial Dice-Dice Fruit. Lucci and Kaku kept trying to convince Luffy and Zoro to let them help, even with Lucci making no effort to hide his plans to kill Vegapunk, and Luffy finally agreed since he knew they could just defeat them again if they tried causing trouble. On that note, Lucci and Kaku were freed and the teams of Luffy and Lucci and Zoro and Kaku sent S-Bear and S-Hawk flying.

The rest of the Seraphim were launching similar assaults in other parts of the Labophase. S-Snake continued her attack against Usopp, Franky, and Lilith’s group, and S-Shark had now started attacking Nami, Brook, and Edison’s group. With S-Shark, at least, Sanji heard Nami’s screams and ran off to help her, but it’s unclear how the other groups will handle everything.

Meanwhile, Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates were hanging out at a bar somewhere in the New World when Shanks received a report that the Kid Pirates had launched an assault on their allies. Shanks decided to meet the Kid Pirates head-on, and as he did, it was revealed that the Red Hair Pirates were on Elbaf, and Dorry and Broggy, apparently old friends of Shanks, had ended their duel and joined up with the Red Hair Pirates. With the Kid Pirates, Killer remarked that Shanks might actually kill them this time, but Kid, for his part, welcomed the challenge.

One Piece Teases a Major Shift in Its Story

The Red Hair Pirates in episode 1109

Going off of the second half of One Piece episode #1109, it seems like there’s about to be a major shift in focus. The fight against the Seraphim has only just started, but with the sudden appearance of the Red Hair Pirates, One Piece will likely go away from Egghead Island for a bit to show what’s happening in other parts of the world. That would hardly be the first time One Piece has done something like that, and with One Piece being in its final saga, it’s a perfect chance to put Shanks in the spotlight.

That idea also makes sense when taking previous episodes into account. Previous episodes have drawn focus to Law and Blackbeard getting into a fight and Garp going to Pirate Island to save Koby, none of which has anything to do with Luffy, so based on that, One Piece episode #1110 will likely see the story start focusing on all the other ongoing plot threads, even if they aren’t directly connected to Luffy’s situation. The opening theme especially gives credence to that idea with everything it showed off, and overall, it will be great to see it all play out.

One Piece Episode #1109 Was Well Worth The Wait

S-Hawk fighting Zoro in episode 1109

One Piece episode #1109’s sudden delay was likely to give the staff proper time to work on it, and the episode more than delivered. The original scenes of S-Hawk’s fight with Zoro had incredible animation and choreography that’s easily among One Piece’s best, and tying it in with making Zoro have a flashback to Mr. 1 perfectly sold how important a fight that was for him. The art and animation for Luffy and Zoro’s team-up with Lucci and Kaku was also notably great, and it continues the excellent precedent One Piece has been setting the for past few years.

Everything in the second half of the episode was also great to see, even if it was more notably lowkey. The lighting and direction used for the Red Hair Pirates’ scenes did a great job of giving them life after so many years of inaction, and that also did wonders to make what little was shown of Elbaf feel wondrous and a true part of One Piece’s world. Everything about One Piece episode #1109 was plenty worth praising, and episode #1110 and beyond will hopefully be the same.

Be sure to watch One Piece episode #1110 when it releases on Saturday, June 29.
