Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini

Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini is the latest addition to Hulu’s growing list of true-crime documentaries, chronicling the story of Sherri Papini’s false abduction. After disappearing for several weeks in 2016, mother and wife Papini resurfaced, claiming to have been abducted and held hostage. However, investigations revealed she had really been staying with a former boyfriend during her absence. In 2022, Papini was arrested by the FBI, accused of lying to federal agents, and of faking her own kidnapping.

While Papini maintained the lie for many years before eventually being caught and facing justice, the docuseries is split into a mere three-part saga, with episodes titled “It’s a Wonderful Life With You,” “Smegma was Relentless,” and “You Never Found Me.” Perfect Wife is like many haunting true-crime documentaries, with the events of Papini’s story playing out like a film, particularly reminiscent of David Fincher’s 2014 film Gone Girl. However, unlike in the film, Papini faced the consequences of her scam, with repercussions extending from the law to her family life.

In August 2023, Papini was released from prison and sent to community confinement. Shortly after leaving community confinement in October, she failed to appear at a pre-trial meeting regarding her pending divorce, which her husband Keith requested the same month she was charged. Papini still talks to her children weekly and is allowed to see them during supervised visitation. She and her husband are not on speaking terms. She will remain on supervised release until 2026, and as of now, she has not yet paid the sentenced fine.

According to transcription records obtained by Record Searchlight from the supervised visitations with her children, Papini is currently writing multiple books. It’s noteworthy that this series isn’t the first adaptation of her story. Lifetime previously explored Papini’s tale in the 2023 film Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini. After her sentence and fees are finally repaid, Papini will likely be keen to tell her side of the story, especially given the renewed media attention and interest in her case since the release of Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini.
