Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Official X account published a statement announcing that the series will not resume in Weekly Shōnen Jump Issue #31 as originally slated. Although Jujutsu Kaisen’s unexpected break was scheduled until June 30, a 21-day suspension, the wait will be extended one more week. The anticipated chapter #263 will be released on July 7.

The additional week of hiatus was decided by the editors to give Jujutsu Kaisen’s author, Gege Akutami, more days to fully recover from his sudden illness and go back to writing in perfect shape. Although the news that Akutami has been recovering is comforting, the extension of the suspension has worried Jujutsu Kaisen‘s fans, who have started to express their concerns regarding the health of the author.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Fans Show Concern Over Gege Akutami’s Health

Fans Ask That the Author Take the Time Necessary to Fully Recover.

The extension of Jujutsu Kaisen’s break was not the decision of the manga artist but of the editorial staff of Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump. However, Sueisha’s health update about Gege Akutami’s recovery doesn’t completely ease fans. While some fans are glad that the series will return soon, others are still worried about Akutami’s condition. Jujutsu Kaisen’s fans started to write supporting messages on X, showing their concerns regarding Akutami’s health and wishing the author a quick recovery.

Fans of the series are naturally worried about Akutami’s condition since manga artists work on a straining schedule that can cause serious health issues. The majority of the messages from JJK‘s fans state that Akutami should prioritize his recovery instead of returning to write the story if he is still feeling unwell, focusing on his self-care, and getting a much-needed rest.

Fans Are Worried That Gege Akutami Is Overworking Himself

This Is Not The First Time the Author’s Health Has Declined

Fans had wondered if the tremendous amount of workload was the cause of Akutami’s sudden illness, as this is not the first time the author’s health has worsened, and he has needed a long break to recover. In June 2021, Akutami took a 1-month hiatus to recover after struggling with his physical condition for a while during the Perfect Preparation Arc. Additionally, on March 3, 2024, fans worried about the author’s health after Jujutsu Kaisen’s chapter #252 had panels with unfinished art, which indicated that Akutami might not have been well enough to complete the chapter.

Akutami also had to work on the cover for volume 26 of the series at the time, prompting fans to believe that he was overworking himself. This was similar to the author’s circumstances during the latest chapter before the recent break; chapter #262 only had 7 pages, but Akutami also had to draw the cover for WSJ magazine, the double-colored page, and the cover for volume 27. Akutami has been taking breaks recently every three weeks; still, the schedule for weekly manga artists is incredibly taxing, which affects the authors.

Other manga artists decided to take regular breaks to maintain a good physical condition, like One Piece and My Hero Academia’s authors. Black Clover’s author even chose to shift magazines to prioritize his health. With Jujutsu Kaisen’s manga currently in its final stretch, the expectation of fans for each new chapter has intensified. However, the author has to put his health before anything. The worries of Jujutsu Kaisen’s fans over Akutami’s well-being should motivate him to strive to take care of himself. Hopefully, Gege Akutami will be back soon to continue lending his talent to the acclaimed Jujutsu Kaisen.
