Inside Out 2 is dominating the box office, leading to questions about whether Pixar’s movie will make more than $1 billion at the box office. Expectations were high for Inside Out 2‘s box office from the time that it was announced. With the first film making $858.8 million worldwide, there was a hope that the sequel could surpass that total. The only major fears about the film’s potential performance stemmed from Pixar’s struggles in recent years. But it became evident as ticket presales were reported and trailer view records were broken that Inside Out 2 would achieve box office glory.

Pixar has seen Inside Out 2 perform even better than anticipated during its theatrical run to this point. The film’s opening weekend came in well above expectations after it earned $154 million domestically. The second weekend had a record-low drop after strong legs throughout the week, resulting in Inside Out 2 already becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2024 after beating Dune: Part Two‘s $711.8 million total. With a staggering total already accumulated, Inside Out 2 making $1 billion looks more promising than before.

How Much More Inside Out 2 Needs To Make $1 Billion At The Box Office

Inside Out 2 Still Has Some Work To Do

Inside Out 2 is still hundreds of millions of dollars shy of crossing the $1 billion milestone. The film managed to make another $100 million domestically in its second weekend, bringing the domestic total to over $350 million. Pixar has found an equally strong audience overseas, as the international box office has already contributed nearly $370 million to its total. As of this writing, Inside Out 2‘s box office total is $724.3 million.

With that performance, the film is already nearly three-quarters of the way to making $1 billion. Inside Out 2 needs to make another $275.7 million throughout the remainder of its theatrical run if it wants to cross the massive milestone. Pixar has already confirmed that a Disney+ release is not coming for months, signaling to audiences that going to theaters is the only way to see the beloved sequel in any immediate timeframe. This bodes extremely well for the film and the studio as Pixar chases its first $1 billion movie since 2019.

It Should Pass It Soon

The stellar performance of Inside Out 2 over its first full week in theaters and through its second weekend all but guarantees that the movie will make $1 billion. It is the biggest movie for children and families in theaters until July 3rd when Despicable Me 4 comes out. Without any direct competition for another week and a half, there is a very real chance that Inside Out 2 will surpass the threshold by the time its biggest competitor comes out.

Inside Out 2‘s box office is also flourishing thanks to strong word of mouth, which has given it great legs early on. The low drop between its first two weekends of release is better than Frozen II, Incredibles 2, and other massively successful animated sequels. Audiences love it as a great way to avoid the summer heat and for the emotional adventure it includes, so that will not change. Following up on how Pixar’s Elemental had great legs last year, Inside Out 2 should continue to dominate and pull in strong daily, weekend, and weekly totals for the foreseeable future.

Whenever it does this, Inside Out 2 should be 2024’s first $1 billion release. Despicable Me 4 and Deadpool and Wolverine could both stand to achieve this in the coming weeks, but that should only be after Pixar does it first this year. It would also be the first movie to achieve that goal since Barbie last summer.

What Inside Out 2’s Final Box Office Total Could Be

It Could Become Pixar’s Biggest Hit Ever

Sadness and Joy walk through long strands of light in Inside Out 2

Passing the $1 billion milestone is one thing, but Inside Out 2‘s box office could finish with a total well above that mark. The movie is already on pace to beat Incredibles 2‘s $1.2 billion haul to become Pixar’s highest-grossing movie of all time. It is also pacing ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie from last year, which finished with a $1.3 billion total worldwide. If that pace holds, there is a chance that Inside Out 2 could finish its theatrical run after making around $1.4-$1.5 billion.

Based on that projection, Inside Out 2 could be in line to break a massive box office record. Passing Incredibles 2 will make it Pixar’s biggest movie, but there are three other animated movies that made more. Frozen II holds the record for the highest-grossing animated movie in history after it made $1.45 billion in 2019. There is a possibility of Inside Out 2 passing that total if it holds strong enough for the remainder of its run, giving Pixar the title for releasing the highest-grossing animated movie ever.
