My Adventures With Superman season 2 engages with a truly decades-long DC power debate by giving it a conclusive answer – but one that raises another problem which viewers have been quick to note. The animated Superman show has taken one of the most creative approaches to the Man of Steel’s iconic comic lore, reimagining heroes and villains alike with new designs and tweaks. This has been especially notable in the second season of the show, as My Adventures With Superman officially introduced Lex Luthor, Steel, Supergirl, and Brainiac into the heart of its story, capitalizing on several prior teases.

However, some of My Adventures With Superman‘s most interesting work when it comes to adjusting DC lore revolves around Superman’s own powers and how he uses them. The DC animated show has even been willing to wade in on a conversation regarding Superman’s ability to breathe in space, and did so with an answer that will prove satisfying for some, and truly troubling for others.

My Adventures With Superman Season 2 Episode 6 Superman in space

My Adventures With Superman season 2, episode 6 weighs in on the age-old debate of whether Kryptonians – and Superman most specifically – can breathe in space with a seemingly very definite confirmation that he can. When Supergirl pretends to be suffering with a malfunctioning space helmet, Clark is understandably horrified, only for Kara to inform him that she was messing with him, since they don’t need the helmets in the first place, as they appear to be able to breathe in space.

It’s a very direct modern acknowledgment of the power debate, and one that may come as an especial surprise, given My Adventures With Superman tends to lean into the technological side of DC lore when and where it can. However, this moment has only exacerbated conversations around the Man of Steel breathing in space, as his conversation about the ability with Supergirl raises an entirely new mystery.

My Adventures With Superman season 2 episode 6 Superman looking shocked at Supergirl in space

One of the most common reactions online to My Adventures With Superman season 2’s space scene is questioning how the pair are able to speak in space in the first place, since air is needed for vocal chords to be able to produce sound. Naturally, the most obvious explanation for this is that the animated world of My Adventures With Superman simply takes place in a world where this isn’t the case, but that’s a perhaps somewhat stifling answer creatively.

On an in-universe level, there’s a real chance the explanation for this is that Kryptonians are not confined to the laws of physics like humanity is. By this logic, the same powerset that lets them breathe in space also lets them use it in the same manner human vocal chords use air.

On another side, it’s possible the show is drawing from one comic explanation that sees Kryptonians be able to hold air in their lungs for a very long time, which could be used here to speak while the “space breathing” lets them function in every other sense. Regardless of the canon reason, it’s certainly entertaining to see My Adventures With Superman play with one of the older debates regarding Superman and his specific powerset.
