WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Transformers #9The Energon Universe era of Transformers is in full swing, and the most recent issue of Skybound’s ongoing series introduces a new element to the lore that could change things forever. Soundwave has made a name for himself as the Decepticons’ new leader, making plans that deliver a devastating blow to Optimus Prime and the Autobots – and in the process, radically reshaping how readers understand the franchise’s Energon continuity.
Transformers #9 opens with Soundwave and Shockwave establishing a bridge between Cybertron and Earth. Shockwave is the first to step through, and the Decepticon’s arrival is enough to turn the tide of battle in the Decepticon’s favor.
The ability to travel from Cybertron to Earth as easily as stepping through a door is a massive gamechanger, and could lead to even bigger stories going forward in the Energon Universe. The Energon Universe thus far has spanned across the galaxy, and now its inhabitants have the means to meet face-to-face.

Shockwave and the Decepticons almost wipe out the Autobots, but Prime and the others get a last-minute savior. Elita-One had previously rescued Ultra Magnus from a Decepticon stronghold on Cybertron, and just happens to notice the portal to Earth as she makes her escape. Elita steps through the portal, managing to save Optimus in the process as the Autobots beat a hasty retreat. As they make their escape, Elita-One manages to damage the bridge, closing the portal between Cybertron and Earth.
Although it’s now damaged, the bridge could be easily rebuilt, as Shockwave is on Earth with the rest of the stranded Decepticons. If and when the Cybertron/Earth bridge gets repaired, that opens up a wealth of story possibilities for the Energon Universe. With that type of technology, it’s now possible for the cast of Void Rivals to get mixed up in the Energon conflicts playing out on Earth. Characters like Darak and Solila could conceivably run across Transformers’ Optimus Prime and G.I. Joe’s Duke, which could set the stage for the first major Energon Universe crossover event across all titles.

Pieces Keep Falling Into Place
Skybound Entertainment and the various creative teams for all the Energon Universe books are clearly building a story across all the titles. The company’s recent Free Comic Book Day Special teased several intriguing storylines to follow in the Energon Universe, such as Hot Rod searching the galaxy for a long-lost Autobot, and the recently-freed Megatron on the path of revenge against his formers second-in-command Starscream. All these disparate stories are likely building toward something even greater for Transformers, and the whole Energon Universe, and it will be very exciting to see how it all unfolds from here.
