Matthew Lewis is interested in returning for the upcoming Harry Potter TV show, but he isn’t trying to rush an appearance. Lewis featured as Neville Longbottom in the original movies and played a significant role in the final movie. Since the franchise came to an end, Lewis has starred in various British movies and TV shows. Neville is still his most prominent role, and Lewis has occasionally returned to Neville as a video game voice actor. The Harry Potter TV show could provide an opportunity for him to reprise it again.

In an interview with People, Lewis explained his interest in reprising his role in the reboot. While explaining that he is “not in any rush” to join the reboot, Lewis explained that he would be interested in potentially appearing in the future. He would love to see how Neville might look as a grown man and how the character has grown and changed since the events of the movies. Check out his quote below:

The reason I got into this job in the first place was because I have a very short attention span. I am very, very poor at maintaining anything for any length of time. I’ve had many, many hobbies and passions over the years. Not a single one do I still do. I fall madly in love with things and then almost immediately forget about them. It’s not something I’m looking at or want to do but would not turn my nose up at. I’d be very interested to see if it was Neville as an adult — a whole different vibe. That could be interesting. I would certainly look at that and consider it.

Can The Original Cast Return For The Harry Potter Show?

Original Cast Cameos May Need To Wait Until The Final Season

Bringing the original stars back to their original roles is a definite possibility. Matthew Lewis is now 34 years old and will be even older when the show premieres. When it comes to an end, Lewis will be over 40 years old. His character will be approximately 36 years old if he brings a child to Hogwarts in the final scene. At that age, he could easily pass in his original role. The reality of that, however, could be a challenge. If a more diverse group forms the Harry Potter TV cast, reprising roles could be practically impossible.

Reappearing as the adult characters in the reboot is not the only possibility, however. The cast could appear in cameo roles, which might be more suitable. If that happens, they can appear in scattered scenes throughout the show, rather than overwhelming audiences with a final scene that already happened in the movies. Actors could be cast as teachers, as shopkeepers, and even as ghosts wandering around Hogwarts. They can also appear through occasional spells that make their characters temporarily older.

Many members of the cast have already reunited for Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts in 2022. That event may have brought closure already, leaving the follow-up show open to build its own reputation, rather than relying on the original movies. They could also theoretically attempt to revive the movie franchise through Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The end of the Fantastic Beasts franchise could leave the perfect opportunity to attempt another movie. The Harry Potter franchise has multiple paths forward, and Lewis is happy to see where it goes.

Harry Potter is HBO’s remake of the iconic Wizarding World film series that consisted of eight films between 2001 and 2011. Each season adapts a book from JK Rowling’s popular series and provides more book-accurate details than the movies did. Upon the announcement of the Harry Potter TV show, the series received harsh criticism for the involvement of Rowling and for many thinking a reboot was unnecessary.
