Although Better Call Saul has now come to an end, the show’s legacy is such that there remains the possibility of multiple spinoff series – with one popular idea potentially continuing an important Breaking Bad trend. As a beloved spinoff of the Breaking Bad franchise, the show has featured many memorable characters, several of which potentially deserve their own series. Even though Better Call Saul concluded with a satisfying ending for most characters after a tense final season, there have since been rumors that a spinoff for one specific character has been in the works.

Better Call Saul saw several characters return after Breaking Bad and a spinoff would likely feature many favorite characters again, especially characters with strong and established careers. Better Call Saul focused on Jimmy McGill, a successful lawyer played by Bob Odenkirk, who becomes mixed up in the dangerous world of organized crime. This colorful lifestyle brings Jimmy into contact with a range of unsavory and interesting characters. However, while many would make for an interesting spinoff series, one character in particular is most deserving of their own show.

Gus Fring’s Spinoff Could Use A Better Call Saul Trick To Bring Back Giancarlo Esposito

A Gus Fring spinoff of Breaking Bad has long been rumored. With a trick inspired by Better Call Saul, one starring Giancarlo Esposito could happen.

A Gus Fring Spinoff Remains The Best Way To Continue The Breaking Bad Universe

His Mysterious Beginnings Hold Unanswered Questions

Gus Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito, is one of the most notorious characters in the Breaking Bad universe and is a natural choice to carry the franchise forward into the future. After he had a significant role in both Breaking Bad and its spinoff series, Better Call Saul, it makes the most sense for Gus to have his own spinoff. Esposito himself is especially open to the idea of a Gus Fring prequel, having previously told British GQ, “Yeah, I would love that“.

Given the mystery surrounding Gus, especially exactly what Don Eladio knows about his past in Chile, a prequel focused on Gus’ history might be the only way forward for the franchise. Small portions of Gus’ backstory are revealed throughout Better Call Saul, but it would be interesting to learn more about how Gus has turned into one of the most iconic Breaking Bad villains. His character also sets up an opening to learn more about him through the fact that he is already an established criminal by the time Better Call Saul starts.

A Gus Prequel Would Continue 1 Important Trend After Better Call Saul & Breaking Bad

The Prequel Would Emphasize Character Desperation

Jimmy and the witness in Better Call Saul season 5 episode Namaste

Although Gus received a satisfactory ending to his story in Breaking Bad, a prequel focused on his time before Better Call Saul would not be uncalled for. After all, Better Call Saul mainly follows the career of Jimmy McGill even after his fate of life in prison is revealed in the Breaking Bad finale. As a result, a prequel that follows the career of a young Gus would not be unprecedented. The show centered on Gus would also continue an established theme of focusing on a character that is so desperate that they fall into a world of crime.

Just like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which focused on Walter White and Jimmy McGill respectively, a Gus prequel would focus on how a character, so driven by desperation, discovers the thrill of crime and eventually becomes the worst version of himself. This theme has appeared in the past two shows in the Breaking Bad universe, and it would make sense to continue it for a third time. While the Better Call Saul prequel may be unlikely, it doesn’t seem completely out of the question, given the rumors about it and Giancarlo Esposito’s own support for the show.
