Warning: contains spoilers for Immortal Thor #10!

A new god-level power has been introduced via Thor, and it is far too disturbing for the MCU. As gods, Thor and his allies have access to powers far beyond the average Marvel character. Thor uses his god-like abilities in the service of good, but plenty of others do not. In Immortal Thor #10, a new ability is introduced, one with dire consequences for its victims, and too dark for the MCU.

Immortal Thor #10 is written by Al Ewing and drawn by Valentina Pinti. Thor and his family are fighting the evil entity known only as Oblivion, who has possessed Tyr, the God of War. Hermod, the speedster, finds the possessed Tyr. Tyr then nails Hermod with a beam of dark power, killing him instantly. It is later revealed that, thanks to Oblivion, Hermod has been completely obliterated from the universe.

He will not go to Valhalla–or even Hel.

Late last year, writer Al Ewing, celebrated for his epic Immortal Hulk run, turned his attention to the Odinson, launching Immortal Thor. The book, leaning heavier into the Norse mythology element than other recent takes on the character, has pitted Thor against the rising menace of the Elder Gods. Furthermore, Immortal Thor has explored the nature of stories and storytelling, shown when Thor becomes trapped in a comic book, created by the Enchantress, that nearly enslaved him to the Roxxon Corporation. Ewing and his collaborators have raised the stakes for Thor and his family.

And now he has raised them even further by introducing Oblivion’s dark power. Using Tyr, the entity lived up to its name, consigning Hermod there. The ability to kill Hermod, a god, would already rate Oblivion as a major foe. However, Oblivion denies Hermod the reward of going to Valhalla, the celebrated home of the Asgardian dead. Evildoers would fare no better with Oblivion, as they too would be erased from existence, and would not go to Hel for punishment. Oblivion’s power is unlike anything Thor has faced in his long life.

Oblivion’s Powers Are Unthinkable in the MCU

Yet It Also Makes Oblivion a Truly Powerful Villain

Oblivion’s powers are dark, even in the comics, but they may be way too disturbing for the MCU. A villain suffering Hermod’s fate would not be ideal, but for a hero to go out similarly is unthinkable. Hermod did not deserve oblivion. The story is still ongoing, meaning there is a possibility that Hermod could return in some fashion. Hermod is still a god, and they are governed by different rules than mortals. However, Oblivion’s new power is still terrifying, and could easily take out Thor in a horrific fashion.
