Almost 18 years since it premiered and 11 years since it (first) ended, Dexter has found a new home on Netflix, and its arrival on the streaming service lines up perfectly with Showtime’s plans for the show’s future. The first season of the crime drama television series was based on Jeff Lindsey’s 2004 novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter. But the show’s popularity and positive reviews resulted in seven more seasons, all of which were separate from the book while still using the same cast of Dexter characters.

Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan is inspired by a real-life killer in Dexter, as he is a sociopath who channels his homicidal tendencies into vigilantism. Dexter lives by a code and only murders heinous criminals who aren’t caught by the police. However, the character’s life is complicated by the fact that he is a forensic technician specializing in bloodstain pattern analysis and Dexter’s sister is a detective working in the homicide division. Dexter was undoubtedly one of Showtime’s most popular television shows, which is why the network has had a hard time letting it go, resulting in sequels and prequels.

Dexter Is Now Streaming On Netflix – Why It’s Worth Watching Despite The Ending Problems

Dexter’s Series Finale Is Widely Disputed

As mentioned above, Dexter was extremely beloved by fans and critics. But the positive reception started to dip towards the end of the show’s run, and Dexter‘s ending is one of the most hated series finales of all time as it wasn’t satisfying and didn’t provide enough answers. Thankfully, the cast and crew wanted to right their wrongs and attempted to give the show a better conclusion eight years after the fact during its 2021 sequel series Dexter: New Blood. Regardless of its faults, the crime drama’s good qualities outweigh the bad and make it worth watching.

From beginning to end, Dexter took viewers on a journey that had its ups and downs, but when it was in its prime, the show was brilliant. There’s a reason why it lasted so long, after all, and why people still talk about it to this day. Ultimately, everyone should check out all eight seasons of Dexter on Netflix, especially if one wants to watch the sequel and the upcoming prequel show, Dexter: Original Sin.

Showtime Is Developing A Dexter Prequel Series

Michael C. Hall looking serious as Dexter

Following the success of Dexter: New Blood in late 2021 and early 2022, Showtime wanted to continue the story with Dexter: Original Sin, a prequel chronicling a young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson. The upcoming show will begin 15 years before the events of the original show’s first season, with Dexter starting his career with the police department in Miami. Unfortunately, the release date for the Dexter prequel is unknown. Hopefully, it’s soon, seeing as a new audience will discover Dexter after its addition to Netflix and prepare themselves for more episodes and stories in this universe.

Based on the character created by author Jeff Lindsay, Showtime’s Dexter follows Miami Metro Police Department’s most skilled blood spatter analyst, Dexter Morgan, as he attempts to satisfy his Dark Passenger’s need to kill by hunting down criminals who have escaped justice. However, using the rules his adoptive father taught him to remain undiscovered, Dexter must walk the fine line of seemingly blending into society while continuously feeding his dark urges. Dexter faces several serial killers as his facade slowly crumbles around him; with every problem solved by his Dark Passenger, another one arises for his suburban fatherly life. When Dexter takes things personally or feels that the law is failing, he takes matters into his own hands and even compromises the investigations of his co-workers. Dexter aired on Showtime for eight seasons before receiving a mini-sequel series called Dexter: New Blood, which picked up ten years after the show’s events. You can buy each season for just $9.99 for Prime Day.
