One of the original stars of Weird Science endorses a potential remake of the film. Weird Science is 1985 teen sci-fi comedy about two nerdy high school boys who invent a computer program that creates the Platonic ideal of a woman, only for their plan to go awry. Weird Science was directed by John Hughes and featured a leading cast including Anthony Michael Hall, Illan Mitchell-Smith, Kelly LeBrock, Bill Paxton, Suzanne Snyder, Judie Aronson, and Robert Downey Jr.

Speaking with Inverse, Hall responds to whether he would support a remake of Weird Science. The actor admitted that he is “certainly too old” to be in an sequel to Weird Science, but he would nonetheless “welcome that.” He said that he needed to “defer to Universal” as well to Hughes’ estate, rather than make any big statements himself. Hall seemed genuine is saying that he doesn’t know “if that’s in the works,” even though he is open to the idea. Check out the full quote from Hall below:

I mean, I’m certainly too old for me to be in a sequel of it, but I mean I would welcome that. Really, I have to defer to Universal and obviously the John Hughes estate. I really don’t know if that’s in the works, but it would certainly be nice if they chose to do that.

Why Now Is The Right Time for a Weird Science Remake

Getting the endorsement from Hall is a big deal when it comes to the potential to remake Weird Science. Director Hughes passed away in 2009, so any potential remake of the film would have to be helmed by a different person. Hughes also cannot directly give his blessing for the iconic ’80s cult classic to be remade or not. In lieu of hearing from Hughes directly, getting a positive reaction from Hall, who was essential to the original film, is a good sign for any potential Weird Science remake.

Weird Science would have a good shot at faring well in the current era. As evidenced through shows like Stranger Things, the esthetics and sensibilities of the ’80s are back in fashion at present. Furthermore, audiences are embracing independent film and the wackiness that can ensue more so than they have been in past years. Both of these cultural patterns would bode well for a remake of Weird Science, if the Hughes estate were to allow it.

While Hall is right that he could not play a high schooler in any potential sequel, a Weird Science reboot could still do work to include the original stars. Said stars include Hall, who has gotten continued mainstream attention. Weird Science also featured Downey Jr., who has become beloved and renowned, recently winning an Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer. The potential for these actors to cameo or playing supporting characters presents another interesting opportunity for Weird Science, once again showing its remake potential.
