Dune: Part Two and The Bikeriders star Austin Butler teases his new character for Ari Aster’s upcoming movie, Eddington. With few details out right now, not much is known about the film except its genre and talented cast. Eddington is being marketed as a “film noir ensemble western dark comedy” about a “small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.” The movie sports a talented ensemble, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Clifton Collins Jr., and Micheal Ward. The film has no official release date yet, but it’s expected in early 2025.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Butler gave some insight into his experience with Eddington and teased his character. He didn’t give much away regarding the story and character, but he said that the experience was “a wild adventure” he got to go on. He also briefly touched upon the kind of character he’ll be playing. Read Butler’s full comments below:

Yeah, I’m a huge fan of Ari and Joaquin [Phoenix] and Emily [Emma Stone] and [DP] Darius Khondji and everybody involved. The entire team was incredible to work with. I don’t want to give much away as far as the story and character go, but it was a wild adventure that I got to go on. I got to play a character who’s very different from anything that I’ve done. Ari and I have been friends for a little bit, and it was great to see him on set. He is such an incredible filmmaker, and he has such confidence and such a sense of humor and wild imagination. I truly loved working with him.

Eddington Seems To Continue Ari Aster’s Streak With Dark Comedy

Could Austin Butler’s Eddington Character Be Better Than Feyd-Rautha?

Aster got his start in horror, with his debut film Hereditary earning rave reviews and a modest box office gross. It currently has a 90% score from critics on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes and globally grossed $87 million off a $10 million budget. Aster continued this craving for horror with 2019’s Midsommar, which also saw success in its reception and box office gross. His third and most recent film, Beau is Afraid, however, was more of an anxiety-inducing dark comedy, which confused and even disappointed viewers who anticipated another horror movie.

Ari Aster has become one of the most talented horror directors of his generation with three weird and disturbing films to his name. Which is the best?

While the details for Eddington are sparse, Aster seems to be continuing his inclination towards dark comedy rather than straight-up horror. While this may disappoint some viewers, Butler is right: Aster does have a twisted sense of humor. It’s so twisted, in fact, that some might find what the director finds funny as terrifying, as there were some moments in Beau is Afraid that elicited horror while making the audience laugh. It was silly, preposterous, and undoubtedly dark. Aster might continue this in his upcoming Eddington.

As for Butler’s character in Eddington, he might be something twisted from the actor that rivals his dark and demented performance as Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two. Aster has a proclivity for writing complex and dark characters and putting them in quirky and crooked situations. If Eddington is anything like his past movies, viewers are in for a twisted treat.
