The latest Energon Universe G.I. Joe miniseries, Scarlett, expands Skybound’s new continuity by incorporating one of the franchise’s most popular elements: ninjas. With the title character assigned to infiltrate the mysterious Clan Arashikage, Scarlett delivers on the promise of high-stakes ninja action. Beyond that, upcoming issues tease that there might be more at stake to Scarlett’s mission, something that could change the Energon Universe forever.

The solicitation for Scarlett #4 – written by Kelly Thompson, with art by Marco Ferrari – hints at the complexity of the title character’s mission. Another reason Scarlett was assigned to infiltrate Clan Arashikage was because the mysterious group has come into possession of some kind of weapon.

The first issue of the Scarlett miniseries isn’t perfect, but it is another solid entry as G.I. Joe establishes its new lore in the Energon Universe.

Another Pivotal Miniseries

The Arashikage are in possession of is currently a mystery, though given that this miniseries takes place in the Energon Universe, it’s safe to assume that it is related to the Transformers somehow. Megatron was previously revealed to be the prisoner of Cobra-La before escaping, so the idea that the Arashikage have come into possession of Transformer-tech somehow isn’t completely out of the question. It’s also possible that the famed ninja clan might be developing weapons thanks to a store of Energon, much like the Dreadnoks were revealed to be doing in the pages of Cobra Commander.

The arrival of the Cybertronians on Earth has caused upheaval in the Energon Universe. The destruction caused by the Autobot/Decepticon war on Earth has already led to the official formation of the G.I. Joe team, who are given express orders to hunt the Transformers down. Unaware that there are different factions of Cybertronian factions, the new Joe team’s aim is to destroy them all, not knowing that the Autobots are potential allies for humanity. Given all of that, it’s easy to see why G.I. Joe’s Stalker would send Scarlett to the Arashikage, if he thinks they’ve got Transformers-based weaponry.
