The Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack is a key element of the movie. The 2015 release was adapted from the erotic romance novel of the same name by E.L. James, which in turn was adapted from her previously written Twilight fanfiction Master of the Universe. The movie was the first in a trilogy adapted from James’ work starring Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele and Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey, all three of which were smash hits that cumulatively earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office.

The soundtrack for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is jam-packed and features both classic tracks and songs that were commissioned specifically for the movie. Many of these underscore the love scenes between Anastasia and Christian as they explore the sadomasochistic relationship that provides the titillating hook for the trilogy. One of those songs, titled “Earned It,” was even nominated for an Oscar in 2016, an honor that was not visited upon songs from either of the movie’s sequels, though the franchise spawned at least one other major Billboard hit down the road.

The 2015 romance movie Fifty Shades of Grey, which launched a trilogy that became a $1.3 billion box office juggernaut, centers some familiar faces.

When Every Song On The Fifty Shades Of Grey Soundtrack Plays In The Movie

Fifty Shades Of Grey Features More Than A Dozen Songs

“I Put a Spell on You” by Annie Lennox – The song that kicks off the entire Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy is an Annie Lennox interpretation of an iconic and frequently covered track by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. The song adds a sultry atmosphere to the opening credits, which showcase both Ana and Christian before they ever meet.

“Call Me” by St. Paul and the Broken Bones – This song plays quietly when Anastasia and her friend Kate are preparing to go out for the night and a surprise delivery from Christian arrives. The lyrics of the song seem to reflect the fact that Christian is about to reach out.

“Tribe” by Theophilus London – This song is playing in the background when Anastasia is out at a bar getting drunk with her friends.

“Rude” by Leon “Roccstar” Youngblood – This track plays at the bar when Anastasia watches from afar while Christian talks to his brother Elliot.

“Meet Me in the Middle” by Jessie Ware – This song plays during an awkward moment where Chistian and Anastasia walk in on Kate and Elliot canoodling on the couch. This is one of the only sensual moments of the movie that doesn’t include the central couple.

“Love Me Like You Do” by Ellie Goulding – This song, which became one of the signature tracks of the movie, plays when Christian whisks Anastasia away on a helicopter ride and takes her to his Seattle apartment for the first time. While the song – which was recorded specifically to be used in Fifty Shades of Grey – only plays briefly in the movie, it became a hit, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard chart in the wake of its release.

“Salted Wound” by Sia – This sensual track plays during the first love scene between Anastasia and Christian before the couple fully begins to explore their sadomasochistic relationship.

“Concerto in D-minor after Alessandro Marcello, II. Adagio” by Johann Sebastian Bach – Christian himself plays this classical concerto on the piano in his apartment when Anastasia walks out into the living room in the middle of the night.

“Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones – This song is playing in the background the next morning while Anastasia prepares breakfast in Christian’s kitchen.

“Earned It” by The Weekend – This Oscar-nominated song plays when Christian drives Anastasia to a hike in the woods. The song does not play for very long in the movie itself, but it is the first song to play when the credits begin to roll.

“Haunted” by Beyoncé – This song plays when Anastasia is experimenting with having her hands bound for the second time, before the full contract negotiations with Christian play out.

“She’s On Fire” by Bo Saris – This 2014 song plays quietly in the background when Anastasia and Christian are privately celebrating her graduation at her apartment.

“Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)” by Beyoncé – This song plays during the love scene where Anastasia is having her first experience with Christian in the Red Room. The slowed-down remix, which boosts the vocals and adds lots of extra instrumentation and reverb, underscores the intensity of the experience. However, there are moments where the song seems more scary than sensual, highlighting Ana’s trepidation about committing to Christian’s lifestyle.

“Witchcraft” by Frank Sinatra – This 1957 song plays while Anastasia and Christian are dancing in his apartment before she meets his sister Mia. The classic oldie playing in such quick succession after the modern Beyoncé remix serves as a strong juxtaposition that underscores the way that their relationship is very different once they are behind closed doors.

“One Last Night” by Vaults – This song plays when Christian surprises Anastasia by showing up when she is visiting her parents. It underscores the scene where he takes her on a plane ride, the second time in the movie that the couple literally takes flight to match the heights of the peaks of their relationship before the valleys return as they continue to negotiate and fight.

“Prelude in E Minor (Op. 28 No. 4)” by Frédéric Chopin – This is another song that Anastasia hears Christian play on the piano, underscoring the darker side of the character as he contemplates his hidden sadness.

“I Know You” by Skylar Grey – This is the second song to play over the closing credits after The Weekend’s “Earned It.” The lilting sadness of the song highlights the uncertain place where the Fifty Shades of Grey ending leaves Anastasia and Christian’s relationship, leading into the 2017 sequel Fifty Shades Darker.

“Where You Belong” by The Weekend – This is the third song to play over the closing credits. It returns the tone of the soundtrack to the combination of sensuality and horror that was previously exhibited best in the “Crazy in Love” remix.
