The cast of Fifty Shades of Grey includes several familiar faces in addition to the two leads it helped launch to bigger stardom. The movie was based on the first novel in the Fifty Shades trilogy by author E.L. James, which itself was originally written as Twilight fanfiction, published as Master of the Unvierse under the pseudonym Snowqueen Icedragon. The movie, which was released in 2015, was directed by Back to Black‘s Sam Taylor-Johnson from a script by the Venom trilogy screenwriter Kelly Marcel.

Over the course of its theatrical run, the movie earned $569.7 million against a budget of $40 million. This was more than enough to earn two more Fifty Shades movies adapting the next two installments of the original novel trilogy. Altogether, the three movies earned more than $1.3 billion in theaters before factoring in VOD, physical media sales, merchandising, and book sales. Many of the cast members of the original movie went on to reprise their roles in the entire trilogy, cementing their connections to the iconic characters at the center of the story.
