Readers of A Court of Thorns and Roses may not know how old certain characters, like Lucien Vanserra, truly are in comparison to the other eternally youthful High Fae, such as Tamlin. The Court of Thorns and Roses books have several High Fae characters who only appear to be in their twenties or thirties, much like the protagonist Feyre Archeron. Lucien Vanserra is one of them, though the matter of his age, much like his character, is more complex than most.

Lucien begins the series as Feyre’s friend in the Spring Court, helping her to fit into the world of the Fae after her arrival. As the series progresses, Lucien’s allegiances shift from Tamlin to Feyre, ultimately choosing her and the Night Court over Spring’s High Lord. Though his role in A Court of Thorns and Roses is small, his storyline creates several possibilities for future books as much of his history is still a mystery. That said, some facts about Lucien can be gleaned during the main story, such as his age.

Hulu’s A Court of Thorns & Roses has the opportunity to improve upon certain aspects of the books, and that means it can do these characters justice.

How Old Lucien Is Throughout A Court Of Thorns & Roses

Lucien Is Less Than 500 Years Old

Lucien in A Court of Thorns and Roses can be determined to be less than 500 years old due to certain timeline details. The series never states his exact age. However, Rhysand does mention that he had been fighting before Lucien was born in the first book, which takes place 500 years after the first Hybern War. In A Court of Wings And Ruin, it is revealed that Lucien’s mother had an affair with Helion, the High Lord of the Day Court, during the war. Feyre theorizes that their affair ended due to Lucien’s conception, making him younger than even his longtime friend Tamlin. Doing the math, Lucien is probably in his mid-400s – ancient by human standards, but quite young for High Faekind.

How Much Older Tamlin Is In A Court Of Thorns & Roses

Tamlin Is Older Than Lucien, Though Not By Much

Tamlin is older than Lucien in A Court of Thorns and Roses, though their age gap is not that large. In A Court of Thorns and Roses mentions to Feyre how he was too young to fight in the first Hybern War. Though it initially appears as if Tamlin may be close in age to Rhysand, his comment to Lucien implies that Rhysand may be older as he fought in the war while Tamlin did not. Tamlin would have been a child then, making his age closer to 500–525 years old.

While this does not seem like a fairly large age gap, it highlights just how strong Lucien’s friendship with Tamlin was (and hopefully still is). Lucien, despite having several older brothers, has the strongest bond with Tamlin as he sheltered him after the death of Jesminda. Tamlin is, in many ways, an elder brother figure to Lucien, making their story even more complex. This bond can be seen in his apprehension and sadness at Tamlin’s actions in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series and how Lucien’s growth away from him ultimately destroyed Tamlin.
