Cassandra Cain, Batgirl, has received a new look that puts a twist on a classic batsuit element. Birds of Prey #10 places the Batgirl and her allies in a pocket dimension which has delivered a 1950s-inspired makeover to the heroines. Of special note is the way that Cassandra’s outfit incorporates trunks, which isn’t seen in heroines looks often and which isn’t seen with the Batgirls.

Birds of Prey #10 has the creative team of Kelly Thompson, Robbi Rodriguez, Gavin Guidry, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles. The issue continues Cassandra Cain’s team-up with Big Barda, Black Canary, Sin, and Vixen. However, it does so by giving them each a 1950s-style outfit to fight in.

Batgirl’s suit, in particular, is extra noteworthy due to its inclusion of trunks, which have not been seen on a Batgirl suit despite being a staple of Batman’s suits over the years. This element adds another layer to Cass’ look in the best way.

Batman’s Trunks Finally Incorporated Into Batgirl Fashion

Cassandra Cain, AKA Spoiler, Rocks Bat-Trunks in Epic New Look

Trunks have frequently been a component of superhero costumes for decades. It is a core aspect of Batman and Superman’s designs, as well as Doctor Fate, Martian Manhunter, and the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. This comic staple, while prevalent among heroes is less prevalent among heroines, who have more often been depicted in skirts, one-piece suits, or shorts. This is true of Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and even Bette Kane’s Silver Age Batgirl. It is far more traditional for the Batgirls to wear pants and the occasional skirt, making Cassandra’s shift to trunks in this dimension a standout design choice.

Batgirl’s outfit in this issue still features the heroine’s typical pants, in a gray color palette, along with a bat ear detailing, a black mask over her eyes, and yellow accents. It also features the Bat-Family’s traditional capes. It hits all the classic components of Batman’s iconic look, but it allows the Batgirls to add the signature trunks that have so often been left out of their designs over decades worth of adventuring and crime fighting. This costume design is similarly incorporated into Barbara Gordon’s suit within the issue, though less noticeable since she has less page time here.

The Bat-Family Shines in Each Costume They Don

Over the years, Batman and his Bat-Family have frequently changed their looks. From disco Nightwing to Jason Todd’s Red Hood makeover, as well as the Batgirls’ many variations, there has been no shortage of style in Bruce Wayne’s adopted hero team. Even the Dark Knight himself has delivered a variety of looks to match his adventures, even if just through minor color variations. Now, this fashionable statement from Cassandra Cain has taken notes from Batman’s classic appearance as the Batgirls’ new 1950s costumes have brought the batsuit’s iconic trunks where they’ve never been before.
