Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Darth Vader #47

Star Wars is setting up a major connection between Luke Skywalker and his mother Padmé Amidala. Having died shortly after they were born, Luke and Leia never knew their mother. Due to their father Anakin Skywalker having been corrupted to the dark side as Darth Vader, the twins were separated and raised on different worlds to keep them safe during the Dark Times of the Empire’s reign. However, it certainly looks as though Luke is about to finally learn about his mother in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

In the canonical Darth Vader #47 by Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, Luke can sense his father who’s claimed new sources of power on Exegol. Fearing that his father may try and seek him out, Luke decides to put some distance between himself and the Rebel Alliance as a precaution. This results in Luke reuniting with Warba Calip, the thieving Force-sensitive from Jedha who’d sent Luke a message about something he might be interested in. This turns out to be one other than Sabé, the former Queen’s Shadow and handmaid to Luke’s mother (who’d recently been serving Darth Vader himself.)

Clearly, Warba didn’t have the whole story about Sabé’s full background and history. Regardless, Luke Skywalker has now found himself face-to-face with a woman who has quite a bit of knowledge and history with both of his parents in the established Star Wars canon.

Sabe Is Looking To Test Luke Skywalker

Does He Carry His Father’s Darkness?

Sabe and Luke Skywalker in Darth Vader #47

Seeing how Luke’s meeting with Sabé serves as the ending for this new issue, it’s not yet clear how Luke will react nor what Sabé’s full intentions are. Having been searching for Luke for quite some time, it’s unclear if Sabé intends to reveal all that she knows and forge an alliance with the younger Skywalker, or if she still serves Darth Vader as she once did.

That said, it does seem as though Sabé wants to see what Luke is made of, much like Emperor Palpatine who was featured earlier in the issue granting Vader permission to try and find his son. Both want to test Luke Skywalker’s caliber as a Jedi-in-training. However, the true excitement is wondering whether and how much Sabé might reveal to Luke about his mother (assuming they become allies in future issues.)

Will Luke Learn About His Mother, Padmé?

It Would Reshape His ROTJ Conversation With Leia

Luke and Leia speak to one another in Return of the Jedi

It would be huge for the Star Wars canon if Marvel’s Darth Vaders eventually reveals that Luke received key insights and history about his mother from Sabé before Episode VI. After all, it would certainly reshape Luke’s imminent Return of the Jedi conversation with Leia, having asked his twin sister what she remembers about their mother before he went to confront their father on the second Death Star. To that end, it’s just as possible that Luke could learn more about his father from Sabé as well, though the opportunities are quite big now that Sabé and Luke Skywalker are finally face-to-face.
