Spider-Man Steals Captain America’s Shield

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Spider-Man’s introduction in Captain America: Civil War is a significant moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking the character’s first appearance in the franchise. After Tony Stark had visited Peter Parker’s home in Queens to recruit him, Spider-Man made a thrilling entrance during the airport scene. Leaping into action upon Iron Man’s command, Spider-Man webs Captain America’s hands and grabs his shield.

This scene established Spider-Man’s place within the MCU in several key ways. Peter’s excitement and nervousness about working with (and fighting against) seasoned superheroes helped him stand out as a new, younger perspective within the MCU. It marked the official initiation of Spider-Man’s journey as a superhero. It also cemented Iron Man’s role as Peter Parker’s new mentor as such a hero. This scene also featured Tom Holland’s interpretation of classic Spider-Man characteristics, including his trademark wit and wonder.

Captain America: Civil War pits two teams of Avengers against one another and introduces new superheroes Black Panther and Spider-Man. The divide between the two perceived leaders of the Avengers caused the other members to choose sides. It all started when the UN decided to take control of the superheroes’ involvement in fighting crimes. Steve disagreed with the UN’s proposal, while Tony supported the decision. Things turn for the worst when Steve’s friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), also known as the Winter Soldier, becomes the prime suspect in a terrorist bombing.

Spider-Man Saves SHIELD Tech

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

After having his high-tech armor confiscated by Tony Stark in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man is initially despondent. After claiming that he was nothing with the suit, Iron Man’s famed reply, “If you’re nothing without the suit, then you shouldn’t have it,was a devastating blow. Nevertheless, Peter was determined to defeat Vulture’s plans to steal weapons stored in the Avengers Tower.

Using his old suit and with limited resources, Spider-Man succeeded and demonstrated his inherent heroism. By defeating Vulture and rescuing the SHIELD technology, Spider-Man proved his heroism and that he understood what the suit represents. This scene marked Spider-Man’s successful graduation as a proper superhero, proving to himself, and Iron Man, that he is worthy. The scene parallels Iron Man’s development in Iron Man 3 when Tony had to prove his mettle without his own suit.

Spider-Man Travels To Space With Iron Man

Avengers: Infinity War: (2018)

Spider-Man’s journey to space with Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War highlighted his intense loyalty to Tony Stark and Tony’s paternalistic feelings towards Peter Parker. Despite Tony’s initial reluctance, Peter’s determination and resourcefulness compelled Iron Man to accept his help in the mission to stop Thanos. This scene spotlighted the deep bond between the two, with Tony taking on a mentor role, worried about Peter’s safety but recognizing his potential and bravery.

Their space adventure featured moments of fun mentorship as Iron Man took the opportunity to train Spider-Man tactically. However, this camaraderie and Peter’s participation set the stage for a devastating emotional payoff. When Peter disintegrated in Tony’s arms after Thanos’s snap, it was a heart-wrenching scene that suggests Tony was right: despite Peter’s abilities and enthusiasm, he may not have been fully ready for the immense dangers they faced.

Iron Man’s Death

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame profoundly impacted Spider-Man’s journey in the MCU, leaving him without his mentor and a pivotal connection to the larger superhero community. For Peter Parker, Tony Stark was not just a mentor but a father figure who provided guidance and emotional support. Tony’s seeming invincibility to Peter made his death a jarring and sobering event, starkly illustrating the grave dangers and ultimate sacrifices inherent in superheroism.

Tony’s death instilled in Peter a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and costs of being a hero. This loss significantly shaped Peter’s actions in subsequent projects, such as Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he grappled with filling the void left by Tony. The pressure to live up to Tony’s legacy and the burden of stepping into a larger role would weigh heavily on him.

Spider-Man Meets Nick Fury

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man’s meeting with Nick Fury signified his rise to being on par with the main MCU heroes. After the events of Infinity War and Endgame, Peter Parker has officially become an Avengers-level superhero. His first clandestine meeting with Fury, the esteemed S.H.I.E.L.D. director, marked an official recognition of this.

The scene, laden with interruptions, humorously yet poignantly highlights the constant tug-of-war between Peter’s civilian life and his superhero duties. Peter was attempting to balance his normal teenage experiences – such as a school trip and his budding romance with MJ – with the pressing demands of his superhero alter ego. The repeated intrusions emphasized the complexities inherent in his double life. This interaction with Nick Fury solidified Spider-Man’s position among the MCU elite but also portrayed the unique challenges he faced as a younger hero.

MJ Knows Spider-Man’s Identity

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, the scene where MJ revealed to Peter Parker that she knew he was Spider-Man was a significant moment for both characters. Typically, Peter guards his secret identity closely, and, throughout the movie, wrestled with whether to confide in MJ. Before he can make that decision, MJ surprised him by revealing she had already figured it out.

This moment highlights the depth of their connection, showing that MJ understands and sees a side of Peter that no one else can. It shows that MJ is not only perceptive and intelligent but also deeply attuned to Peter’s true self. MJ bridges the gap between Peter’s two worlds, allowing him to be his authentic self with her. It’s a pivotal step in their relationship, setting the stage for a more meaningful and supportive partnership as they face future challenges together in the MCU.

Mysterio Reveals Spider-Man’s Identity

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

The shocking scene in Far From Home where Mysterio revealed Spider-Man’s true identity to the world marked a pivotal moment in the MCU. This revelation was the realization of one of Peter Parker’s greatest fears: his identity being exposed and putting his loved ones in imminent danger. As the video played, accusing Spider-Man of orchestrating the drone attack and naming Peter Parker as the masked hero, the gravity of the situation hit hard.

This event drastically altered Spider-Man’s trajectory in the MCU. The once-protected boundary between his superhero and civilian lives w shattered. It pushed him into the spotlight, demanding greater accountability and forcing him to navigate the complexities of fame and infamy. While the earlier Far From Home scene in which Spider-Man makes his new suit suggested he would become the next Iron Man, Spider-Man’s identity being revealed would ultimately scupper this by the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

3

Aunt May’s Death

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

After depicting Spider-Man’s origin story in two previous franchises, Homecoming opted to skip over it. While this allowed the movie to hit the ground running, it meant that some essential aspects of Spider-Man’s narrative were omitted, most notably the guilt Spider-Man felt over Uncle Ben’s death and the famed “With great responsibility” advice Ben imparted. Spider-Man No Way Home shifted this to Aunt May, who delivered the iconic line moments before succumbing to her injuries and dying in Peter’s arms.

This loss profoundly shapes Peter’s journey, pushing him into a new phase of maturity and resilience. Her death strips away the remaining semblances of his youthful innocence, compelling him to fully embrace the weight of his responsibilities as a hero. Aunt May’s death served as a pivotal emotional turning point and redefined Peter’s motivations, honoring her legacy with every act of heroism.

Collaborating With Previous Spider-Men

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

The collaboration between Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and the Spider-Man variants played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield marked a significant moment in No Way Home and Spider-Man’s narrative. Following the devastating loss of Aunt May, Peter Parker grappled with his grief and sense of isolation. The Spider-Man variants provided him with much-needed support and guidance.

Maguire’s Spider-Man, in particular, emerged as a mentor figure, which Holland’s Spider-Man had been seeking since Iron Man’s death. This interaction serves as a metaphor for the MCU’s Spider-Man learning to trust in his own abilities and inner strength. The shared experiences and encouragement from his counterparts equipped him with the resilience to carry on as Spider-Man. This collaboration, steeped in mutual respect and understanding, prepares him to continue his heroic journey with renewed confidence, despite the personal losses he has endured.

1

The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

The ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home established a new dynamic in Spider-Man’s MCU narrative, transitioning him into the role of a more grounded, “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.” After the multiverse chaos and monumental battles, Peter Parker’s choice to erase everyone’s memory of him to protect his loved ones resulted in a return to simpler, more local heroics. This shift symbolizes Peter embracing Tony Stark’s earlier advice to focus on being a friendly neighborhood hero rather than getting involved in larger, more dangerous conflicts.

It represents a full-circle moment, closing his narrative arc from a young, eager hero mentored by Tony Stark to an experienced, self-reliant Spider-Man. The conclusion is both succinct and satisfying, portraying Peter’s growth and maturity. With the MCU’s Spider-Man 4 on the horizon, the future of Peter’s narrative remains uncertain. However, this fresh start allows for new storylines and challenges, and signified a major change in Spider-Man’s place in the MCU.
