Warning: Spoilers for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire quietly provided further hints on how many Titans Monarch is aware of in the Monsterverse. As Godzilla and Kong’s Monsterverse movies have proven, Monarch’s knowledge of the Titans has changed significantly since Godzilla rose out of the ocean to fight the MUTOs in 2014. Since then, they’ve uncovered several more monsters, though the exact number of which has been unclear for a long time.

Projects like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Godzilla: King of the Monsters are indicative of the idea that Legendary’s Monsterverse is littered with Titans, including many that have yet to be shown on the big screen. That makes sense, considering that the movies can only scratch the surface in terms of showing what Monarch has been up to since their founding. It can be presumed that they’ve identified several Titans over the years. At the beginning of King of the Monsters, it was established that the number of known Titans was “17 and counting.” Godzilla x Kong offered an update to that figure.

The Monsterverse had slowly been sowing the seeds for many mysteries which were finally explained in detail in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Godzilla x Kong Confirms Monarch Has Discovered At Least 245 Titans

Scylla in Godzilla x Kong

Curiously, a monitor screen at one of Monarch’s bases in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire labeled Scylla as “Titan 24.” Elsewhere in the film, the Monsterverse’s Tiamat was listed as “Titan 19.” Another marker put a monster designated “Titan 245” somewhere in the ocean. In providing this information, the movie confirmed that Monarch has at least 245 Titans on its radar. That’s not to say that this is all they’ve found, but it does shed insight on how their scope has expanded since King of the Monsters. After all, it proves that they found and gave official designations to more than 200 Titans between 2019 and 2027.

In King of the Monsters, Dr. Serizawa specifically mentioned the number 17, but that figure wasn’t final in the film. One more was added to the list when Ghidorah let out his call, as the third MUTO was an undiscovered Titan at the time. Godzilla: Dominion, a graphic novel prequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, subsequently increased the count to 19 with Na Kika. Likewise, Kingdom Kong introduced Camazotz. Of course, that only accounts for a handful. Apparently, though, that was just a small fraction of what Monarch had found.

How Did Monarch Find So Many Titans Between 2019 And 2027?

As for how Monarch’s intel on the Titans has increased so dramatically, part of the reason can likely be attributed to all the disturbances caused by Ghidorah’s emergence in 2019. As noted above, his call rooted out both Na Kika and the third MUTO. It makes sense to presume that other, then-unknown Titans were stirred by Ghidorah’s roar as well. Rising out of the ground or even causing some seismic activity underground could have attracted the attention of Monarch’s scientists.

Another factor could be the progression of Monarch’s technology. Their vehicles and resources have been appearing increasingly futuristic since King of the Monsters. If their technology is continuing to improve, that could account for how the number of Titans has multiplied so rapidly. Since Titans are their expertise, it stands to reason that one of Monarch’s priorities would be the development of Titan detection equipment.

There’s also the matter of Monarch’s Hollow Earth exploration. The discovery of the hidden Hollow Earth realm in Godzilla vs. Kong clearly led to Monarch growing a presence down there, as evidenced by their bases in Godzilla x Kong. It wouldn’t be surprising if they found additional Titans lurking in the Hollow Earth or if some were awakened by increased human activity in their territories.

The Monsterverse’s 200+ Titan Count Could Be Crucial To Godzilla vs. Kong 3

Godzilla and Kong roar into the sky in Godzilla x Kong The New Empire

While the number of Titans existing in the Monsterverse had no impact on Godzilla x Kong’s story, that may not be the case for the sequel. After all, the thought of there being more than 200 Titans hibernating on Earth lends the Monsterverse a great deal of storytelling potential. With this framework, a future Monsterverse show or movie would have an organic way of bringing a Toho favorite into its world. Anguirus, Gigan, King Caesar, or Kumonga could easily be among the 200 Titans and could emerge at any time.

More specifically, the number could be used to launch Godzilla and Kong’s greatest battle yet. When Ghidorah awakened the Titans, it was regarded as a potential turning point for the Earth that could have decimated humanity, even though the number of Titans unleashed on the planet was less than 20. The notion of 200 Titans being awake at the same time and roaming the Earth’s surface would magnify the threat posed by Ghidorah and his minions in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

My Biggest Concern For The Godzilla x Kong Sequel

While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Monsterverse’s movies, I still have one major concern about Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s sequel.

Such a scenario could be used to facilitate a Titan team-up of epic proportions. Were another Titan to repeat Ghidorah’s actions on a much larger scale, this would create a massive mess for Godzilla to fix. There’s no question it would fall on him, considering that he seems to see the entire surface of the planet as his territory. And because Kong has become a protector Titan in his own right, it’s not hard to imagine that he would also be involved in that fight, naturally as an ally to Godzilla.

Trying to rein in 200 monsters could provoke an all-out Titan War, which could be used to drive the story of the Godzilla x Kong sequel and make it the ultimate culmination of the trilogy. Something of this magnitude does feel like the next step since Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gave Godzilla and Kong new allies in the reborn version of Mothra, the Monsterverse’s Shimo, and the Great Apes, with which they could combat a large Titan force. Not only that, but the scale of the battles is increasing as the Monsterverse continues, so one that eventually starts a real Titan War does sound like something that will happen sooner or later.
