LEGO Star Wars has released two new Mandalorian sets. Based on the final episodes of The Mandalorian season 3 and the Reclamation of Mandalore, these new models feature brand-new Star Wars minifigures and backdrops depicting the Imperial Remnant’s secret operations on the Mandalorian homeworld. Likewise, the new sets are a prime example of what the LEGO Group should continue doing when making sets based on locations and/or battles from the galaxy far, far away.

Released on June 1st, both LEGO’s Ambush on Mandalore (75373) and Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle (75386) are currently available for purchase. Both are from The Mandalorian season 3’s final battle on Mandalore, featuring major characters from the third season and soldiers representing the Imperial Remnant with all-new designs and minifigure molds. However, one of the best features is that both sets can be combined to create an even bigger and better set for LEGO Star Wars collectors. Here’s our hands-on review of both of LEGO’s new Mandalorian sets.

Featuring 109 pieces, LEGO’s new Ambush on Mandalore Battle Pack is a quick and easy build. It’s also one that features brand-new Imperial minifigures as the primary draw. Featuring enough blasters for each minifigure, the simple backdrop is a nice mix of both gray and tan rock pieces, conveying the Imperial Remnant’s secret base on Mandalore as seen in The Mandalorian season 3 which was held within a network of caverns near the planet’s mines and stores of valuable beskar steel.

The battle pack build also comes with a transparent curved bar with an axel end, allowing for either the battle pack’s Imperial commandos or Mandalorians to be displayed taking the battle to the skies via their respective jetpacks. The battle pack also features a turret alongside a munitions crate to hold extra thermal detonator pieces. Priced at $20, the overall build and price-to-piece ratio feels fair in the current era, especially considering the inclusion of four minifigures.

Coming in at 286 pieces, LEGO’s other new Mandalorian set is certainly bigger than the first (though not by much). To that end, the $40 price tag does feel more egregious, especially considering this set only comes with four minifigures as well. That said, the set itself will certainly be a draw for fans of The Mandalorian season 3, depicting Paz Vizsla’s tragic sacrifice at the hands of Moff Gideon in his new Mandalorian battle armor and his new Praetorian guards, the predecessors to those serving Snoke in The Last Jedi.

The build features its own collection of gray and tan pieces to depict the typical Mandalore landscape. It also includes the blast door that separates Paz Vizsla from his fellow Mandalorians during their initial attack on Gideon’s base as seen in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 7. As such, the blast door can come down with a well-built feature that lets it quickly drop by simply lifting a lever on the model’s backside. It’s a very nice play feature, joining the top of the build’s mounted and rotating turret with its twin stud-shooter cannons.

A Closer Look At Both Of LEGO’s New Mando S3 Minifigures

New Minifigure Molds Are Always A Win

While Ambush on Mandalore features both a blue-armored Mandalorian and a blue-armored Nite Owl, the brand-new Imperial Commandos are what’s truly exciting from this new LEGO Star Wars Battle Pack. Ambush on Mandalore is the first time this unique stormtrooper variant has received the brick-built treatment, featuring brand-new helmet molds and printing. As such, one can imagine collectors buying multiple copies of this new LEGO Battle Pack thanks to Gideon’s Imperial Commandos, especially those into army-building with legions of minifigures.

Likewise, LEGO Star Wars’ Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle comes with a brand-new minifigure of Moff Gideon who’s wearing the special all-black Mandalorian armor he had custom-built ahead of The Mandalorian season 3 and its final episodes. This includes a new helmet mold for Gideon’s horned helmet and red visor, along with new helmets for the two red-armored Praetorian Guards who flanked Gideon and dealt the killing blows to Vizsla in the beloved Star Wars show. While a Paz Vizsla minifigure was featured in 2021’s The Armorer’s Mandalorian Forge, this new model’s Vizsla does have some subtle updates in the printing.

Combining LEGO’s New Mandalorian Sets Is A No-Brainer

An Epic Star Wars LEGO Feature That Should Be Seen More Often

One of the most exciting elements with both of LEGO’s new Mandalorian sets is that they’ve specifically been built to be combined into one bigger model by collectors who purchase both. Each set features an easy connection point on the corner, one that collectors could easily modify and change depending on how they want the orientation. This is not unlike LEGO’s recent sets inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar movies, which also came with this simple yet exciting “linking” feature, making sets with shared terrain and/or from the same location even bigger as one continuous build.

As such, one would hope this feature will continue with future LEGO Star Wars with models inspired by events and different conflicts rather than vehicles and ships alone. It’s a great way to depict the full scope of a battle from the galaxy far, far away as seen with these new models which both depict the Reclamation of Mandalore where Mandalorians went to war with Gideon’s faction of the Imperial Remnant. To that end, LEGO’s Ambush on Mandalore Battle Pack is just begging to be paired with Paz Vizsla and Moff Gideon Battle (and vice versa).

The Mandalorian

Fantasy
Sci-Fi

The Mandalorian is set after the Empire’s fall and before the First Order’s emergence in the ever-growing Star Wars universe. The series follows the travails of a lone gunfighter named Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Acting as the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian has become incredibly popular on Disney+, partly due to Mando’s relationship with Grogu, which the internet dubbed “Baby Yoda” upon his introduction in season 1.
