Izuku Midoriya, more commonly known as Deku, went through many different personality changes throughout the story of My Hero Academia. Part of Season 6, called the Dark Deku arc, unveiled a completely new and never-before seen side of the series’ greatest hero. This arc featured Deku at his most serious and solemn, becoming jaded by the struggles of life as a hero.

A Reddit user and talented cosplayer, u/MaskedSaiyanCosplay, has recreated the iconic Dark Deku look perfectly in a jaw-dropping cosplay featured at Anime Boston. The Dark Deku hero costume is unlike any previous uniform Izuku wore before in the series, with a much more gloomy look than the peppy hero usually portrays.

This recreation of the costume is astoundingly anime accurate, like the cosplayer has walked straight off the screen and into real life. The mask is the most striking part of the look, with dark green, almost rabbit-shaped ears protruding from the top of the helmet and piercing green pupils.

The Astounding Costume Depicts Deku at His Most Terrifying

The Dark Deku Arc Featured Izuku’s Intense and Serious Side

The eye area of the mask is black, and the bottom is metallic and silver, giving it a terrifying aura. There are green glowing spikes at the back of the costume, appearing like lightning, that hint at his powerful Quirk, One For All. They also wear a bright yellow cape and backpack, black pants, a black top with bright red sleeves, white gloves, and silver and red sneakers. The bright, vibrant colors of the outfit call to mind Deku’s previously upbeat and fun personality, but overall, the look is far more menacing and serious than any previous iteration of Izuku Midoriya.

The Dark Deku arc marks a very difficult and tumultous time in Izuku’s life. During this arc, he began to isolate himself from others and fight completely by himself, much to everyone else’s dismay. He was too worried about potentially causing others harm, so he chose to go off on his own entirely, which had devastating effects. Deku became very beaten down and weakened since he was purely relying on his own abilities. One for All is a very useful and important Quirk, but Deku is not invincible, and he unfortunately comes to realize that the hard way.

Deku’s Friends Rescued Him From Only Relying on His Own Powers

In This Arc, He Learned That Accepting Help From Others Can Actually Be a Very Powerful Act

Thankfully, Deku’s friends swooped in to the rescue and assured him that working with others and fighting as a team is far more beneficial than trying to battle alone. This arc was certainly one of Deku’s most difficult, but undeniably helped him grow as a hero and learn some crucial lessons about accepting help from others when it is necessary. u/MaskedSaiyanCosplay represents the hero’s physical appearance during this season phenomenally well, capturing the Dark Deku outfit to perfection. This hero costume was very popular due to its epic nature, making the My Hero Academia character unexpectedly terrifying and fearsome.

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
