After capturing and absorbing the powers from the JSA, Jadestone is compromised by Green Lantern Alan Scott’s willpower. Suddenly faced with the concept of free will, does JADESTONE continue to execute Waller’s orders or have a change of heart? Meanwhile the remaining JSA members attempt a rescue mission to retrieve their teammates and escape to the Tower of Fate!

This summer, DC Comics will begin its newest crossover, Absolute Power. The event sees Amanda Waller taking her crusade against the DC Universe’s metahumans out into the open. By partnering with her allies in the Trinity of Evil, Failsafe and the Brainiac Queen, Waller is going to steal the powers of every single hero and villain on Earth. To help her enforce her rule, Waller has Task Force VII, an all-Amazo team, each one armed with the powers of a particular Justice League member.

Absolute Power will be told over a main four-issue series, but the event will also feature several tie-in issues with the Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman ongoing titles. There will also be a few spin-off miniseries such as Absolute Power: Origins and Absolute Power: Task Force VII, the latter of which will highlight one of the new automatons working under the Trinity of Evil. While all members of Task Force VII follow Failsafe and Waller’s orders, one android is becoming a bit more independent thanks to Green Lantern.

The solicitation for Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3 reveals that the Justice Society of America will be going up against Jadestone, the ‘Green Lantern’ of Task Force VII. However, Jadestone is going to get a taste of Green Lantern Alan Scott’s willpower and it’s going to have a surprising effect on the robot. The Amazo is going to suddenly understand free will, putting Jadestone at odds with its orders and potentially giving the Justice Society a chance to make it out of Absolute Power unscathed.

How Waller Gained Jadestone and Other Task Force VII Members

At the end of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Amanda Waller consulted with the Council of Light (unaware that she was being manipulated by Brainiac). Postulating that metahumans were the root cause of the Earth’s problems, Waller suggested mass imprisonment for anyone with powers. The Light, however, encouraged eliminating metahumans altogether and gave Waller all the resources she needed to start her mission. Waller began slowly and stayed in the shadows, watching and observing heroes like the Titans and the Doom Patrol throughout the Dawn of DC.

As DC’s heroes became embroiled in the conflicts of Lazarus Planet and Knight Terrors, Waller began accruing assets to help her see her goals through. After enough waiting, Waller found the perfect opportunity to gain even more power. In the “Beast World” crossover, Waller convinced the United States President to activate the Bureau of Sovereignty, giving Waller more power and control than ever. At the end of the crisis, Waller stepped out into the public eye and informed the world of her plans to wrest control of the world back from metahumans.

While Waller was working on her endgame, Batman’s backup persona Zur-En-Arrh was on a similar trajectory. After transferring his consciousness to Failsafe’s indestructible body, Zur-En-Arrh embarked on a crusade to end crime in the world, starting with Gotham But the new Batman already had plans brewing as Robin discovered Failsafe had acquired several Amazo androids and was planning to use them to help him establish order on Earth by force. Though Failsafe’s actions have horrified the Bat-Family, Waller has already reached out to the new Batman, offering the opportunity to pool their resources.

Jadestone’s Turn Reveals How Strong Alan Scott’s Willpower Really Is

Absolute Power Task Force VII 3 Mora Variant Cover: the Amazo Jadeston design sheet.

Green Lantern fans may already be aware that, unlike the other ring-slingers in the DC Universe, Alan Scott’s ring isn’t connected to the Emotional Spectrum. The Golden Age Green Lantern’s powers come from the mystical relic known as the Starheart (though much like the Corps members’ Power Rings, Scott’s ring is also dependent on willpower). Alan Scott’s ring has always had a broader power set than Green Lanterns and is capable of some truly impressive feats such as time travel, transmutation, and even the ability to alter reality.

While there’s no doubt Alan Scott is a powerful Green Lantern, his skills are often overlooked compared to some of the more recent and mainstream Emerald Knights. To be fair, heroes like Hal Jordan and John Stewart have had god-level power at their disposal at various points. For all the feats Scott can do with his Power Ring, other Lanterns have similarly done with their power boosts. However, this upcoming development with Jadestone could show that Alan Scott is hiding power that eclipses every other Green Lantern.

By absorbing Alan Scott’s power, Jadestone is gaining something that sets it apart from the rest of its teammates in Task Force VII: Willpower and the ability to rationalize things for itself. The Starheart has been capable of a lot of things in the past, but helping a robot develop free will is something an average Green Lantern simply can’t do with their rings when creating constructs. Alan’s ability to help Jadestone break from the pack could come in handy as Task Force VII descends upon the DC Universe.

Can Green Lantern Help Other Task Force VII Amazos Break Free?

Absolute Power Task Force VII 3 Sherman Variant Cover: the Amazo Jadestone with its fists up.

If absorbing the Starheart’s powers can help Jadestone develop free will and question its actions serving under the Trinity of Evil, then it’s possible Green Lantern could share that with the other Task Force VII members. By helping the Amazos gain the ability to think for themselves, DC’s heroes could potentially sway Waller’s Amazos to help them fight against the Trinity of Evil. While there’s no guarantee it’d be successful, the surprising power held by the most powerful and underrated Green Lantern is giving the world a green ray of hope.

Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3 is available on July 31st from DC Comics.

Green Lantern

Green Lantern is the name given to several characters in the D.C. Comics canon, centering on individuals who dispense intergalactic justice. Green Lanterns can harness the power of willpower and can create unique spectral objects to face off against their enemies. Though some Green Lanterns have assisted with the Justice League, they primarily belong to the Green Lantern Corps.
