Warning! MAJOR spoilers for Invincible! The hit superhero series Invincible is filled with a harrowing number of death scenes, but only one hit the comic’s co-creator hardest. Invincible artist Ryan Ottley answered questions in an ‘Ask Me Anything’ thread on Reddit and shed his personal feelings about the death that was the hardest for him to draw.

In /r/Invincible, the Reddit community dedicated to the comic and Amazon Prime adaptation, Ryan Ottley participated in an AMA to answer fans’ burning questions about the show. One community member asked Ottley which death was he most reluctant to draw, to which the artist revealed it was Omni-Man’s death in Invincible #141.

Ottley said the scene was “sad to visualize” and weird because he had spent so much time with the characters. Ottley discussed how he channeled the intense emotions he felt during the Grayson family’s worst moments into his art so fans would feel the gravity of the scene.

Omni-Man’s Death Was the Worst One for Invincible’s Co-Creator

Death is unfortunately an all-too-common occurrence in Invincible. Throughout the series, Mark Grayson loses friends, allies, and even family. But no death hits the young hero harder than when his father finally passes away in one of the series’ final chapters. Omni-Man, Invincible’s father, participates in the final battle against the series’ central antagonist, Grand Regent Thragg, a fight in which Nolan’s enemy does serious internal damage that is too much for the Viltrumite to recover from. After the fight, Invincible and Omni-Man have one final conversation right before Nolan finally succumbs to his injuries.

There are plenty of Invincible deaths that really get the waterworks moving. Rex Splode’s sacrifice during the “Invincible War” storyline is a particularly sad one. As is Mark’s little brother Oliver being murdered by Thragg. But Ottley’s right about how much weight Nolan’s passing has. Omni-Man was a complicated figure who did bad things, yet tried to atone for them. More importantly, Nolan is the central character’s father, and seeing someone lose a parent is always going to be a tragic sight. Out of all of Invincible’s deaths, Omni-Man’s passing is always going to stand out as the most impactful.

Omni-Man’s Passing is Invincible’s Most ‘Real’ Death

At its core, Invincible is a story about a father and son. While many of the story’s deaths are tragic in their own ways, this one hits hard because of how relatable it is. The passing of a parent is an awful thing, even for a complicated figure like Omni-Man. For all the things Nolan did, he’s still Mark’s father, and it’s always a heartbreaking thing to lose a parent. Ryan Ottley hoped to make Invincible fans feel the emotional weight of Omni-Man’s death, and it’s safe to say he succeeded.
