Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Inside Out 2!

Inside Out 2‘s post-credits scenes continue to explore the inner workings of Riley’s mind and others, providing new revelations. The main story of Pixar’s Inside Out sequel sees Joy and the other prime emotions come into conflict with Anxiety and Riley’s other new emotions that come from puberty. By the time Inside Out 2‘s ending comes to a close, Joy and Anxiety have opted to work together to help make Riley the best person she can possibly be. It is through this narrative that the movie brings the current chapter of Riley’s life to a satisfying conclusion.

Just because the main story of a movie ends when the credits begin to roll, that does not mean that everything is wrapped up. Inside Out 2 does include a post-credits scene that connects back to an earlier moment in the film. There is also some additional footage that plays during the earlier portions of the credits sequence. Considering Inside Out‘s ending was followed by credits scenes, the sequel copying the decision is not a surprise. What is shown during Inside Out 2‘s after-credits is ultimately a mixture of funny moments and a potential setup for Inside Out 3.

Like all Pixar movies, Inside Out 2 is designed to appeal to both grown-ups and kids, but how appropriate is it for the littlest family members?

Inside Out 2’s Credits Show Riley’s Dad Has Anxiety Too

Riley Isn’t The Only One

Anxiety introduces herself to the other emotions in Inside Out 2

The early portions of Inside Out 2‘s credits include footage of Riley talking to her parents after returning from camp. Riley’s mom asks her how camp went, and Riley responds with “It was good” after Ennui controls her response. This leads to a brief glimpse inside the minds of Riley’s parents and their emotions, with Anger taking control in Riley’s mom’s mind after the short reply lacking any details. The scene then jumps to the inside of Riley’s dad’s mind, and the mid-credits scene shows Anxiety pop up from behind the control panel.

It is through this scene that Inside Out 2 confirms that Anxiety is an emotion that also exists in Riley’s dad’s mind. Anxiety tells the other emotions, “She goes away for three days and all we get is, ‘good’?” This leads to the other emotions noting that this seems normal, and they return to watching the game from a memory. Envy, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Nostalgia are not shown in either of Riley’s parents’ minds during the credits scene. Showing that Riley’s dad has Anxiety as one of his emotions opens the door for both adults to have them all.

Joy Visits Deep Dark Secret In Inside Out 2’s Post-Credits Scene

Riley’s Darkest Secrets Are Revealed

Sadness and Joy go to the sense of self in Inside Out 2

The official Inside Out 2 post-credits scene sees Joy return to the Secret Vault. Earlier in the movie, Joy and the other prime emotions become trapped along with locked away memories like Lance Slashblade and Bloofy. This is also where the emotions encounter Deep Dark Secret. While Slashblade helps the emotions escape, Deep Dark Secret remains behind. The movie does not reveal what Riley’s deep dark secret is at this point. The reveal instead comes when Joy returns to break Deep Dark Secret free from the vault in Inside Out 2‘s end-credits scene.

Deep Dark Secret reveals that he is the embodiment of the memory of Riley burning a hole in a rug, making that her deepest, darkest secret – or so it seems. Joy is surprised by this answer, as she thought it was going to be the time Riley peed in the pool. Embarrassed by the memory of this other event, Deep Dark Secret elects to close himself back in the Secret Vault. Inside Out 2‘s after-credits scene concludes there, with Joy failing to get him free.

How Inside Out 2’s Credits Set Up Inside Out 3

There Is Still More To Explore

The contents of Inside Out 2‘s credits scenes do not directly set up Inside Out 3, but they are further evidence of what a sequel could explore. The earlier footage shows that there is still much audiences do not know about the inside of Riley’s parents’ minds. A full shift to exploring Mr. or Mrs. Anderson is unlikely, but Inside Out 3 could potentially look to explore more of their emotions. It is also possible that the scene is a tease of a later sequel where audiences will see Anxiety and other new emotions inside the mind of Riley as an adult.

Meanwhile, returning to the Secret Vault is an intriguing decision for the credits. Deep Dark Secret remaining there means there are other secrets of Riley’s that could still come to light in future installments. This could range from sillier things like peeing in the pool to more notable discoveries, such as that Riley is gay, bisexual, or non-binary. That is one of the more popular theories about Riley in the franchise, and Inside Out 3 could potentially return to the Secret Vault if her coming out is part of the story.

In any case, Inside Out 2‘s credits scenes showcase that there is still a lot more to explore within this world. Pixar did not need to directly set up Inside Out 3 during these scenes. They instead work as continuations of the main story and fun scenes to add on for audiences who stick around. Inside Out 2 is better off leaving more of an open canvas in terms of what could come next than directly teasing what the next chapter of Riley’s life will be like.
