Dark Souls is one of the most influential franchises in modern gaming, with its legacy being among the most important of the previous decade, thanks to the visionary direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki. However, the latest development is exciting for fans looking to get exposed to its lore or even newcomers wishing to experience stories within its universe for the first time. Announced by Yen Press, the new manga Dark Souls: Redemption is releasing its first volume in English on August 27, 2024.

The Dark Souls universe has mystified gamers everywhere since the eponymous game and its predecessor, Demon’s Souls, hit the market in 2009. They’re challenging games that allow players to adjust to their hazardous worlds at their own pace while boasting profound lore and intriguing characters.

But Dark Souls: Redemption promises a new experience that either new or longtime fans can appreciate as the manga approaches its Summer 2024 release.

Dark Souls: Redemption Manga Teases an Original Story in Summer 2024

Yen Press is Distributing the Series by Julien Blondel and Shonen

As announced by Yen Press on their X (formerly Twitter) account on June 3, 2024, Dark Souls: Redemption is slated for an August 27, 2024 release, bringing the Mana Books series to North America. The series features an original story within the Dark Souls universe by Julien Blondel and Shonen, promising to match the series’ foreboding atmosphere with an engaging story, beginning with Volume #1. Yen Press even provides a synopsis of the series in their announcement post, teasing a grim, ominous plot.

The series features perhaps more dialogue than Dark Souls fans are used to, but it follows a young woman who wakes up in a cemetery, seemingly without knowing her name in this manga. The ensuing chapters take a more familiar form quickly, with undead assailants, mysterious allies coming to her aid, and a gargantuan “titan” creature composed of dead bodies. Dark Souls Redemption boasts highly detailed art and matches the game’s aesthetic incredibly well, with obligatory comparisons to Berserk being easy and justified in this case.

Yen Press already has Elden Ring: Road to the Erdtree available, with its latest copy, Volume #4, to come at an undetermined date. However, this story follows the main plot of Elden Ring more closely while instead boosting the art of Nikiichi Tobata. There’s one surprising twist: The Elden Ring manga is hilarious and can catch readers off guard in the best ways. Volumes #1-3 of Elden Ring: Road to the Erdtree are currently available for readers looking forward to similar manga like Dark Souls: Redemption.

With Dark Souls’ noted similarities to existing dark fantasy manga like Berserk and Claymore, it’s exciting for more readers to get a chance to check out the series. While it’s currently available through Mana Books, it’s only in the original French from the publisher, so Yen Press’ localization will make the beautiful series more accessible. Even fans of typical brooding seinen manga with intense combat and eldritch abominations will be excited to pick up Dark Souls: Redemption once it’s available.
