Sasha Bordeaux has been confirmed to join the DC Universe in a role that could well make her the franchise’s best Catwoman following Peacemaker season 2. Casting news for Peacemaker season 2 revealed Sol Rodriguez would be joining the Peacemaker cast as the Batman antihero and member of Checkmate. Bordeaux is a more recent character, having debuted in 2000, but is still a figure with many notable DC ties. Considering everything known about Peacemaker season 2 and the DCU, it would appear that the implications of this character’s presence could affect multiple stories, including The Brave and the Bold.

The upcoming DCU release schedule seemingly intends to build a large, inhabited universe out of the enormous canon found in the comic books. As a result, characters like Sasha Bordeaux may be inserted into the universe at any point in their comic history. As such, the fact that Bordeaux has an extensive history in the shadowy Checkmate organization suggests she may well be part of the faction in Peacemaker season 2 – though it’s her ties to Batman that hold some of the most interesting prospects for the franchise.

Sasha Bordeaux Has A History As Batman’s Love Interest In DC Comics

She Follows A Long Line Of DC Lovers Including Vicki Vale And Talia Al Ghul

Like Catwoman before her, Sasha Bordeaux has had a complex relationship with Bruce Wayne and Batman in the comics. The character, created by Greg Rucka and Shawn Martinbrough, first appeared in 2000 and has had an important role in her own fair share of comic stories. Hired by Lucius Fox as a bodyguard to Bruce Wayne, Bordeaux’s unwavering dedication to her work is evident. As such, it’s perhaps no surprise that her relentless background research uncovers his secret identity as Batman.

Bruce then takes Bordeaux on as an apprentice in crime fighting. Slowly, over the course of their time together, she falls in love with him. After they are imprisoned together, he realizes that he loves her, too. Following this, Bordeaux becomes involved with the Checkmate organization after being attacked in prison. This leads to an antagonistic relationship with the already-cast Maxwell Lord that eventually causes Bordeaux to lose her body and become a cyborg, transforming her through the OMAC virus – all of which makes her a truly fascinating candidate for a DCU debut.

How Sasha Bordeaux Is Different From Catwoman

Sasha Bordeaux And Selina Kyle Are Both Complicated DC Characters

Catwoman has been a fixture of Batman cinema over the years, and each iteration has been special and unique. Michelle Pfeiffer was simultaneously sensual and unsettlingly unhinged, while Anne Hathway was crafty and devious. The newest iteration played by Zoë Kravitz has created a compelling, multifaceted character who walks the line of darkness in a way that could create a stable, lasting relationship with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. Following the evolution of this relationship in The Batman universe, it makes sense for the DCU to do something notably different.

Where Catwoman plays outside the systems, Bordeaux, a new and intriguing character, works from within them, whether with Checkmate or as Bruce Wayne’s bodyguard. While Catwoman is usually grounded, or at most has catlike reflexes, Bordeaux fits better into the fanciful build of the DCU via her cyborg OMAC build. Bordeaux also brings in a conflict between Batman’s rigid view of right and wrong versus another more morally complex figure, but this time with a potentially superpowered government operative, which allows for a similar dynamic to emerge with a fresh and interesting coat of paint.

Why Sasha Bordeux’s Batman Romance Is Perfect For The DCU

New And Strange, The Character’s Legacy Has Much For James Gunn To Draw From

Much has been done throughout Batman storytelling with romances pulled from the comics. The most overdone, however, has been Catwoman, who has been a Batman love interest in the 1960s film, Batman Returns, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Batman. While there is a reason that the films have turned to this character multiple times, there are components of that dynamic that can be explored with other characters and other ideas. In an attempt to reinvent the DC Universe with new and interesting changes, inserting a character like Bordeaux into the universe makes sense.

In The Brave and the Bold, Batman’s son Damian Wayne plays a crucial role. As such, it seems this iteration of the Dark Knight has a full romantic history, involving more than just Catwoman. It would be in line with this for Sasha to be a current or past lover in Bruce’s history following this logic – especially since James Gunn’s DCU already appears to be setup for the kind of surreal storyline that Sasha turning into an OMAC cyborg would entail, as these features are too well-suited to Gunn’s characteristic larger-than-life approach to the superhero genre to not be used.

Whatever the intent for Sasha Bordeaux in Peacemaker, there are countless opportunities ahead for the DCU to explore her character and its intricacies. Indeed, it’s also worth noting that the comic character has another relationship with Mr. Terrific, suggesting the DCU could lean more into this story or even combine elements of both. Pulling from influences new and old, it is clear that James Gunn is building the new DC Universe with an eye for taking what works in the comics, both new and old, and reinterpreting them for modern audiences, making characters big and small exciting.
