Warning: contains spoilers for X-Men #35The greatest tragedy to ever befall the X-Men was the genocide of Genosha when the vile Cassandra Nova slaughtered over 15 million mutants. A major tenet of Krakoa’s Resurrection Protocols was a promise to one day resurrect all the murdered mutants of Genosha… a promise that looked like would be broken with the recent end of the Krakoan Age. However, the brilliant X-Men #35 has revealed that New Krakoa was able to bring back all the Genoshan mutants, a miracle that will change the future of the X-Men forever.

Since the Genoshan genocide in Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, the mutants of Earth have grieved their losses, but perhaps none more so than Kate Pryde – whose father was murdered on Genosha – and Emma Frost, whose precious students all lost their lives.

Emma and Kate got sweet revenge on Cassandra Nova and helped the dead of Genosha find meaning in their death, but nothing could ever fix the loss of these mutant souls. Thankfully, Kafka’s return to Earth in X-Men #35 – bringing New Krakoa back from the White Hot Room – has unveiled the greatest feat of mutant circuitry in history, with all 15 million mutants killed in Genosha returned to life.

The Mutants Slaughtered In Genosha Have Finally Been Resurrected

After 24 long years, Cassandra Nova’s greatest sin has been reversed

The genocide on Genosha in 2001’s New X-Men has shaped the Mutant Mythos since the tragedy occurred, influencing how the X-Men view their place in the world and their relationship with other heroes. Cassandra Nova, the architect behind the slaughter, is one of the X-Men’s greatest villains and also Charles Xavier’s “sister,” an evil psychic entity called a “Mummandrai” by the Shi’ar. Filled with immense hatred for all of mutantkind, and dedicated to getting revenge on Xavier, Nova used a rogue Master Mold to create two horrific Wild Sentinels to attack Genosha, the inspiration for the assault on Genosha in the recent X-Men ’97 series.

X-Men Can Die Again – After 5 Years, Marvel Strips the X-Men of Their Resurrection Powers

When Kafka brings New Krakoa back to Earth from the White Hot Room, Emma Frost immediately notices the mass presence of mutants due to her psychic abilities. New Krakoa spent the past 15 years resurrecting all 15 million Genoshan dead, bringing them back to Earth to give them the chance to stay planet-side or return to New Krakoa. Since Egg, Eva Bell, Proteus, and Elixir – the key members of The Five – were all stranded on New Krakoa, they were able to use the leftover essence of Hope Summers after her sacrifice in the White Hot Room to continue the Resurrection Protocols. Finally, after more than a decade of work, they accomplished what The Five had always hoped to do.

Emma Frost’s Heroic Journey Has Come Full Circle

She has always done it for the children

Emma Frost calling out Iron Man Genosha

The resurrection of the Genoshan mutants is a miracle for all of the X-Men – and for the families of the lost dead who now have their loved ones back – but Emma Frost was particularly impacted by the tragedy. Emma’s journey from villain to hero happened because of her love for mutant children, and teaching them how to survive, so when all of her students were slaughtered in front of her eyes on Genosha, it broke her. Frost has spent the years since the attack dedicating her life to mutant children, and holding other heroes accountable for their lack of help, so the return of these dead mutants is a true blessing for the iconic diamond hero.

The Krakoan Age is over, but it left one final gift for the X-Men, the return of millions of lost mutants to the planet. While the genocide on Genosha will never be forgotten, the mutants of Earth can finally begin a process of true healing. Now, the X-Men have more purpose than ever, fighting for a hated and feared diaspora spread across the world, whose safety and security they must protect.
