Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction episodes #1 and #2.Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction might have come to Crunchyroll late into the season, but it’s already one of their best new anime, if not the best. The anime’s unique blending of sci-fi drama and slice-of-life character writing has made it just as fun to engage with as the original manga, and with its stellar animation courtesy of Production +h., it’s always been great to watch from a visual standpoint.

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is proving to be a great anime, but it’s ruined by some incredibly controversial choices on Crunchyroll’s part.

The anime coming so late into the season and at such a late timeslot is one thing, although both were likely out of Crunchyroll’s control, but beyond that, the way Crunchyroll is presenting Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction makes for a poor viewing experience that makes it unnecessarily hard to watch. It’s unknown why Crunchyroll is presenting the show in such a way, but considering how they usually handle anime, it’s hard to justify their decision.

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s Subtitles Are Inaccurate & Horribly Utilized

Crunchyroll’s bizarre handling of subtitles, explained

The biggest problem with Crunchyroll’s handling of the Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction anime is the horrible way the subtitles are being used. For starters, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s subtitles are blatantly for the English dub script, which leads to a lot of instances of characters saying things that even someone who doesn’t speak Japanese should be able to tell is incorrect. While it’s understandable for a localization to take some liberties with the original text, it’s odd that the anime would take so many and even odder that Crunchyroll wouldn’t keep it separate from the Japanese dub.

Making things even worse is the lack of care in the implementation of the subtitles. Not only is the on-screen text and background dialogue never translated for some reason, but because the subtitles are for the English dub and its specific timing, there are many scenes in Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction with either no subtitles for dialogue or subtitles for dialogue not being said. All of it comes together for a confusing and frustrating experience far below Crunchyroll’s usual standards, and it makes it unnecessarily hard to watch what’s easily one of the best new anime of the season.

Why Is Crunchyroll Handling Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction So Poorly?

Being one of the most highly anticipated adaptations of the season; it’s surprising to see how its been treated

Hiroshi in episode 2

Crunchyroll is doing a terrible job with Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction, and it’s hard to understand why. With how suddenly the show was announced, it might be that Crunchyroll might not have had time to get a proper team to handle Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction’s subtitles, so they left everything to Ocean Productions, the studio behind the English dub, even though they weren’t equipped to do as good a job as Crunchyroll. Regardless, it still makes Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction hard to watch in its original language, so hopefully, Crunchyroll will try and fix things before the series finishes.
